A água tem um papel essencial na fundação e qualificação do espaço nas cidades. Lisboa nasce da água, do estuário, que lhe proporcionou ao longo do tempo condições para que os povos aqui se fixassem e dele subsistissem. Em tempos a principal via de transporte e abastecimento da cidade, o rio serviu os períodos da história que antecedem e sucedem a industrialização. Ainda hoje o rio Tejo constitui uma das principais vias de abastecimento da cidade, no entanto a sua relação com a mesma foi-se vendo cada vez mais enfraquecida, nomeadamente na Lisboa Oriental, onde os problemas de articulação urbana são mais expressivos. É necessário agora, através de um novo olhar sobre a importância do papel da água na urbe, devolver o rio a Lisboa e reformular o tecido industrial da cidade, através da consolidação do espaço público e da introdução de novas formas de habitar. Dividido em seis capítulos, o presente ensaio analisa a relação entre a indústria e a água na cidade, ao longo do tempo, e propõe preservar a natureza produtiva que caracteriza este tecido, trazendo a possibilidade de habitar dignamente próximo do trabalho e do lazer. É através dos temas Entangled Life, Chão Comum, Habitar e Durável/Reversível que se estrutura a intervenção, desenvolvida a diferentes escalas: a da cidade, a da plataforma oriental, a do edifício e a da casa.

Water plays an essential role in the foundation and qualification of urban spaces. Lisbon owes its existence to water, specifically the estuary, which provided over time the conditions for people to settle here and sustain themselves. In the past, the river was the primary means of transportation and the city's water supply, serving the periods of history before and after industrialization. Even today, the Tagus River remains one of the city's primary sources of supplys. However, its relationship with the city has progressively weakened, especially in Eastern Lisbon, where urban coordination issues are most pronounced. It is now necessary, through a fresh perspective on the significance of water in the urban environment, to restore the river to Lisbon and reconfigure the city's industrial fabric by consolidating public spaces and introducing new forms of habitation. This essay, divided into six chapters, examines the relationship between industry and water in the city over time and proposes preserving the productive nature that characterizes this fabric. This approach brings the possibility of dignified living in proximity to work and leisure. The intervention is structured around the themes of Entangled Life, Common Ground, Habitation, and Durable/ Reversible, and it is developed at different scales: the city, the eastern platform, the building, and the house.
