The master’s in informatics and management has a duration of two years, corresponding to the completion of 120 ECTS credits. These credits are distributed among compulsory courses, elective courses, free electives, and the Dissertation in Informatics and Management or the Project Work in Informatics and Management. The listed elective courses will be offered in after-work hours, and students may choose either the recommended courses or others that better suit their schedules.

Objectives

Students of the master’s in informatics and management (MIG) are expected to acquire specialized technical knowledge in the areas of Informatics and Management, with a focus on digital transformation, as well as to demonstrate specific competencies for complex projects and/or research work.

  • Provide advanced interdisciplinary training that combines solid knowledge of informatics, data science, digital technologies, and security with organizational management practices and models.
  • Enable professionals to lead digital transformation processes, with a focus on strategic analysis, technological innovation, and IT change management in business and institutional contexts.
  • Develop competencies in the design, development, and evaluation of information systems, emphasizing technological solutions aligned with organizational strategic objectives.
  • Train specialists capable of integrating multidisciplinary teams and working in complex environments, using digital transformation methodologies, critical thinking, and results-oriented approaches.


Encourage the production of applied and innovative knowledge through the development of projects or dissertations that respond to real challenges in society and the business market.


Promote an ethical and sustainable perspective on the use of information technologies, with attention to security, privacy, social responsibility, and organizational impact.


Prepare students for scientific research and the pursuit of doctoral studies, fostering skills in research methods, data analysis, and scientific writing.



The learning objectives for the master’s in informatics and management at Iscte are aligned with the principles of the European Higher Education framework (such as the European Qualifications Framework — EQF/NQF).

Specifically, a graduate of this program is expected to demonstrate the following:

Knowledge and Understanding

  • Critically understand the concepts, models, and technologies related to informatics, management, and digital transformation in organizations.
  • Analyze organizational and technological dynamics that influence the implementation of information systems and digital innovation.


Application of Knowledge

  • Apply data analysis techniques, process modeling, and systems management to solve complex organizational problems.
  • Design and implement information technology solutions using current methodologies and tools suited to business contexts.


Critical Thinking and Problem Solving

  • Critically evaluate technological solutions and management decisions based on effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability, and strategic alignment.
  • Solve multidimensional problems by integrating technical knowledge with leadership, communication, and adaptability skills.

  • Work effectively in interdisciplinary and multicultural teams, assuming leadership or collaborative roles in IT and management projects.

  • Conduct applied or academic research using appropriate methodologies, contributing to the generation of new knowledge or organizational innovation.


Ethics and Responsibility

  • Act ethically and responsibly in the use and development of technologies, respecting principles of privacy, information security, and social impact.


Thesis / Final work

The program intends for students to develop and demonstrate abilities of independent work, planning, investigating, systematizing, developing, writing (in the form of a dissertation) and presenting their introductory work of scientific activity around a well-defined topic. The work will be guided by a supervisor or recognized specialist that, among other things, will help the candidates to choose the most appropriate research methodology. If the theme chosen is multidisciplinary, it is possible to have a co-supervisor in order to adequately cover the scientific areas involved. This curricular unit ends with the defense of the dissertation made before a jury appointed for this purpose in a public examination.

Iscte strongly encourages dissertations to be written in English, not only because this promotes their international dissemination by making them available in the institutional repository, but also because it facilitates the production of scientific articles based on the results of the research described in the dissertation. The acceptance for publication of such an article in an international event or journal with scientific peer review, prior to the defence, is a factor that will positively influence the final grade obtained in this UC. Please note that the dissertation grade counts for almost half of the final master's degree average, as this average is calculated on the basis of the credit-weighted grades of all the UCs taken within the scope of the MIG.

Although the "dissertation" option is favoured, as it provides a good introduction to the world of research, which is the main forge of knowledge throughout the world, the master's student may opt to carry out a "project work" of an innovative nature, totalling the same credits as a dissertation, whose preparation must be anchored in a well-identified development methodology and whose report, which will also be subject to a public defence before a jury, must meet the same quality requirements as a dissertation. Project work will typically be of a more applied nature than a dissertation and may be carried out within the scope of a research centre linked to ISTA, under the supervision of one of its researchers, or conducted in a company, typically under the supervision of a professor from DCTI or IBS and co-supervised by a specialist of recognised merit from that same company.
