Financing and support

ISCTE – Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL) welcomes expressions of interest in the areas of Management and Economics, Social Sciences and Public Policies, and Technologies and Architecture, regarding national and international funding programmes. Applicants must indicate which research unit they would like to be associated with in terms of this application. Integration in networks and partnerships contributes towards ISCTE-IUL’s central goal to foster excellent research through new projects, ensuring their sustainability in the long run.

ISCTE-IUL is an institution that combines excellence in teaching and research with a multi- and interdisciplinary approach, while also investing in knowledge transfer. Research Units at ISCTE-IUL conduct outstanding research and continuously conduct scientific research in over 200 projects. ISCTE-IUL provides the necessary services, committees, infrastructures, laboratories and expert technical teams to guarantee process quality and to support research and teaching activities.

The Research Units and the the Research Support Office (RSO) offer research teams all the required assistance for the development of their research activities.

There is a large array of internal and external specific sources of support, awards and funding allocated to the accomplishment of research activities.

Funding Sources

The available funding sources are varied and must be analysed in the light of research goals. Specific programmes are designed for each research area, both in individual terms and for collective projects.

Funding opportunities are publicly available on portals such as ERACAREERS and EURAXESS. It is also important that researchers regularly search for available funding opportunities through the European Research Council and the European Commission.

Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) publishes detailed funding information on open calls, including individual grants and support to diverse projects.

Support and Awards

ISCTE-IUL Scientific Awards

ISCTE-IUL Scientific Awards aim to foster and recognize excellent international scientific publishing authored by the ISCTE-IUL faculty and researchers.


Eligible outputs are published papers, either online or in print, in international journals listed by Thomson Reuters’ Web of Knowledge (former ISI Web of Knowledge) and SCOPUS-SCImago.

For Scientific Awards purposes, selected papers are research articles which were published in the previous civil year in journals listed in the first two quartiles of WoK and/or Scopus-SCImago, according to the most recently available impact factor information. Scientific domains under consideration are those defined according to Journal Citation Reports and SCImago Journal Rank typologies.

All articles must clearly state authors’ ISCTE-IUL institutional affiliation in order to be considered.

Tender for Scientific Initiation Studentships (BIC) at ISCTE-IUL

The current tender for Scientific Initiation Studentships at ISCTE-IUL is available for first cycle students or for those attending the first three years of the Integrated Master’s Programme in Architecture.

Grants under this tender are financed by ISCTE-IUL's own funding and cover a six month period.

The selection panel may also attribute two honourable mentions per School.

Grantees are integrated in one of ISCTE-IUL’s Research Units  during their studentship’s term, for training and scientific project development.

Alternatively, grant holders may request to use this amount as a contribution to their academic fees at ISCTE-IUL.

Third cycle grants at ISCTE-IUL

This particular grant aims to contribute to the progressive development of PhD students’ skills in scientific, pedagogical and technical activities deemed relevant to their training.

It also boosts the pursuit of tasks and services that foster the grantee’s acquisition of knowledge and performance of best practices in these activities, in view of their academic and professional development plan.

These grants are major facilitators in terms of students’ participation in activities and projects, as well as their ability to resort to external advisory and services, provided that they contribute to their knowledge acquisition and best practice performance, and are related to their work plan.
