A presente dissertação propõe traçar os limites da teoria arquitectónica. Compre-endendo a sua inclusão na linguagem, foi relevante estudar a origem etimológica das pa-lavras teoria e linguagem, realçando as suas ligações com a reflexão filosófica e com o teatro. A linguagem é a “faculdade humana de expressão e comunicação de pensamentos e sentimentos” (Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, 2001, p. 2275) Através do estudo muito apoiado nas teorias de Saussure, Derrida, Heidegger e Wittgenstein conclui-se a impossibi-lidade da fiel descrição da realidade por parte da linguagem, esta apenas espelha o mundo, simulando-o. Na arquitectura, seja ela construída ou idealizada, o conjunto dos elementos que a possam representar serão sempre insuficientes. A experimentação da mesma oferece-nos perpetuamente muito mais do que qualquer desenho, maquete ou fotografia. Nesta lógica conseguimos prescrever um limite à teoria arquitectónica. Para além desse limite encontra-mos algo sobre o qual não podemos falar. Acerca daquilo de que se não pode falar, tem de se ficar em silêncio.

The present dissertation propounds to find the boundaries of architectural theory. Following the fact that theory itself is contained within language, it proved relevant to study the etymological origin of both theory and language. The mutual ancestry between theory, philosophical thinking and theatre was of particular relevance. Language is the “human fac-ulty of expression and communication of thoughts and feelings” (Academia das Ciências de Lisboa, 2001, p. 2275, tradução nossa). Through study heavily reliying on the theories of Saussure, Derrida, Heidegger and Wittgenstein we concluded that language is unable to accurately portray reality, it works through a processes of mirroring, which can only simulate its subject. In regards to architecture, the drawing, model and photograph ensemble always proves to be insufficient in representing the whole architectural work or idea. The experi-mentation of architecture constantly offers a lot more than any sort of representation. Fol-lowing this logic, we can determine a limitation to architectural theory. Whatever finds itself beyond that restraint, is something which cannot be talked about. Wovon man nicht sprechen kann, darüber muss man schweigen.
