Esta dissertação de mestrado visa estudar a realidade das crianças de rua de Luena, na República de Angola. Procurar-se-á compreender os motivos que levaram estas crianças a optar por sair das suas casas e a procurar soluções na rua e os motivos que, numa segunda instância, as levaram a querer voltar para casa ao aceitarem a proposta de reintegração familiar de uma instituição. Para esta investigação optou-se por explorar a história de vida de alguns rapazes acolhidos no Lar Ana Jetu e assim compreender de que forma se desencadearam os vários acontecimentos até chegarem à decisão de regressar a casa. Além disso, foi também explorada a importância do papel do assistente social do Lar e o apoio que este prestava às crianças. Em relação à metodologia, o paradigma adoptado foi o qualitativo de natureza indutiva tendo como foco compreender e interpretar os significados por trás das acções dos entrevistados. Como técnicas de recolha de dados foram utilizadas a entrevista, observação participante e análise documental sobre o projecto. No final da investigação ficou claro que o principal motivo que levou os entrevistados a sair de casa é o mesmo que os faz aceitar a proposta do assistente social quando este os encontra na rua: a procura por melhores condições de vida. As crianças não aceitam ir para a instituição pela possibilidade da reintegração familiar, mas sim por saberem que vão poder ter acesso a alimentação, educação e um ambiente seguro. Isto torna a possibilidade da reintegração familiar numa consequência e não numa causa.

This master thesis aims to study the reality of street children in Luena, Republic of Angola. We will seek to understand the reasons why these children chose to leave their homes and look for solutions on the street and the reasons that, in a second instance, made them go back home by accepting the proposal for family reintegration from an institution. For this research it was decided to explore the life story of some boys who were welcomed at Ana Jetu Home and thus understand how the various events were triggered until they came to the decision to return home. In addition, the importance of the role of the Home social worker and the support he provided to children was also explored. Regarding the methodology, the paradigm adopted was the qualitative one of inductive nature focusing on understanding and interpreting the meanings behind the actions of the interviewees. Data collection techniques were interview, participant observation and document analysis about the project. By the end of the investigation it became clear that the main reason why respondents left home is the same reason that took them to accept the social worker's proposal when he meets them on the street: the search for better living conditions. Children do not accept going to the institution because of the possibility of family reintegration, but because they know they will be able to access food, education and a safe environment. This makes the possibility of family reintegration into a consequence rather than a cause.
