tualmente, os animais de companhia representam um relevante papel na sociedade e são considerados como membros da família por muitos cidadãos. No ano de 2015, em cerca de 54% dos lares portugueses vivia, pelo menos, um animal de companhia. Tendo em conta a importância que os animais têm para muitas das pessoas que com eles escolhem viver, é importante que o Serviço Social esteja informado sobre tais relações e treinado para incluir os animais na sua prática. A presente dissertação procura explorar a realidade de indivíduos que vivem com um companheiro animal com o qual estabeleceram um vínculo significativo para as suas vidas. Pretende-se estudar essa ligação e, ao mesmo tempo, apresentar um panorama sobre o seu impacto para a intervenção do Serviço Social com estas pessoas, bem como possibilitar uma reflexão sobre o papel do assistente social nessas situações. O estudo sustenta-se numa pesquisa qualitativa de lógica indutiva e contou com diferentes procedimentos metodológicos: análise documental; entrevistas semi estruturadas; e análise de conteúdo categorial. Os resultados obtidos, mostram com evidência o importante papel do animal na vida dos sujeitos de atenção, com peso em várias dimensões das suas vidas que afetam o seu bem-estar. Para além disso, conclui-se que o sistema de proteção social funciona de forma excludente perante estas famílias e que existe falta de adequação e de preparação nas respostas, serviços e estruturas e falta de informação por parte dos profissionais.

Today, pets play a significant role in our society and are considered family members by many citizens. By 2015, at least 54% of Portuguese households lived with at least one animal companion. Given the importance that animals have to many of those who choose to live with them, it is important that the Social Work is informed about such relationships and trained to include animals in their practice. This dissertation seeks to explore the reality of individuals living with an animal companion with whom they have established a meaningful bond to their lives. The aim is to study of this connection and, at the same time, to present an overview of its impact to the practice of Social Work with these people, as well as to allow a reflection on the role of the social worker in these situations. The study is based on a qualitative research of inductive logic and has counted on different methodological procedures, such as: documentary analysis; semi-structured interviews; and categorical content analysis. The obtained results show with evidence the important role of the animal in the life of the subjects of attention, with weight in several dimensions of their lives that affect their well-being. In addition, it is concluded that the social protection system excludes these families and that there is a lack of adequacy and preparation in the responses, services and structures and lack of information on the part of the professionals.
