Esta tese de doutoramento visa contribuir para o preenchimento de uma lacuna de pesquisa no conhecimento sobre As relações Político-Diplomáticas entre Portugal e Angola no período compreendido entre 1976-1985. A tese examina a evolução das relações entre os dois Estados desde o conturbado processo de descolonização, passando pela fase do reconhecimento oficial da República Popular de Angola por parte do Governo português e de vários países africanos e europeus, procuramos perceber como foram estabelecidas as relações de cooperação desde o I ao IX Governo Constitucional português. Também se procurou compreender o papel que a Presidência da República de Portugal desempenhou na melhoria das relações entre os dois Estados, enfatizamos a importância do Acordo Geral de Cooperação no reforço das relações entre os dois países e consequentemente os trabalhos desenvolvidos pela Comissão Mista Luso-Angolana, ao nível da cooperação económica procuramos compreender quais os domínios que foram considerados prioritários e analisamos também os fatores que contribuíram para o bloqueio das relações políticas entre os dois Governos. O acesso a importante documentação nos arquivos do Ministério Negócios Estrangeiros, da Presidência da República de Portugal, no centro de Documentação Amílcar Cabral, complementada com a análise dos Diários da Assembleia da República e com a consulta em vários artigos de jornais e revistas, permitiu obter uma visão inovadora das relações políticas Luso-Angolanas que pretende complementar a literatura historiográfica existente.

This Doctoral Thesis aims to contribute to filling a research gap in knowledge about the political-diplomatic relations between Portugal and Angola in the period 1976-1985. The thesis examines the evolution of relations between the two states since the troubled process of decolonisation, passing through the phase of official recognition of The People's Republic of Angola by the Portuguese government and various African and European countries, seeking to understand how cooperation relations were established from the First to the Ninth Portuguese Constitutional Governments. An understanding of the role that the Presidency of the Republic of Portugal played in improving relations between the two states was also sought, with emphasis on the importance of the General Cooperation Agreement in strengthening relations between the two countries and consequently the work carried out by the Luso-Angolan Joint Commission, in terms of economic cooperation an understanding of which areas were considered priorities was sought together with an analyses of the factors that contributed to the blockage of political relations between the two governments. Access to important documentation in the archives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Presidency of the Republic of Portugal, the Amilcar Cabral Documentation Centre, complemented by an analysis of the Diaries of the Assembly of the Republic and consultation of various newspaper and magazine articles, were key in obtaining an innovative view of Luso-Angolan political relations that aims to complement the existing historiographical literature.
