This work, developed during the academic year of 2020/2021 under Studio 5 of the Final Project
of Architecture course unit, presents the research carried out for the development of the proposal for
the rehabilitation of the Monastery of Santos-o-Novo, located in Lisbon. The expansion and
rehabilitation of this building aims to face the small number of beds available in the Iscte-IUL
university residence, as well as the creation of a new museum space, dedicates to the Holy Martyrs
of Lisbon, with a view to opening the Monastery to the public and offering a workplace for the spare
time of the students residing there. This project considers the current issues of sustainability and the
food system, through the proposal of construction with recyclable, sustainable and easy-to-apply
materials, as well the use of rainwater for irrigation of the now proposed cultivation spaces and toilet
flushes.
The purpose of this dissertation is to understand how buildings with pre-existing heritage values
can be intervened, respecting the character, history, and particularities of construction, adapting them
to new ways of living in the 21st century through the implementation of building systems, sustainable
building techniques and materials.
It will seek to know how buildings such as the Monastery of Santos-o-Novo can be rehabilitated
and transformed to accommodate new programmatic functions, respecting the structure, and giving
them a new use and also understanding how the existence of cultivation sites can help to streamline
spaces.
