Este trabalho é uma busca pela identidade do território da Lezíria Grande, uma pequena ilha fluvial, com aproximadamente catorze mil hectares, situada na foz do Tejo, cuja paisagem predominantemente agrícola, configura a essência da província Ribatejana. Nele se apresentam, de maneira sucinta, alguns dos seus elementos mais caracteristicos - etnografia, sociologia, arquitectura, economia e agricultura - que ao longo dos anos configuraram a sua paisagem. Naturalmente, o percurso fluido e relacional da nossa investigação, ampliou-lhe o sentido, impondo uma reflexão sobre a constante transformação dos territórios e como essa mutabilidade constrói a arquitectura do campo e das cidades. Procura ainda entender como as realidades urbana e rural interagem entre si e com os paradigmas do seu tempo, influenciando a construção de valores culturais e paisagísticos. Para além da introdução e das conclusões a tese estrutura-se em duas partes. A primeira encontra-se dividida em cinco capítulos e aborda os contextos sociopolíticos que caracterizaram o Vale do Tejo ao longo do tempo. Após um olhar genérico, a tese centra-se no aproveitamento territorial estrito e aplicado à Lezíria Grande. A segunda parte delibera algumas considerações sobre a realidade actual e futura do lugar. No final, é incluído um ensaio que relata de modo ficcional, o processo do nascimento e amadurecimento da cidade de Lisboa.

This work is a search for the identity of Lezíria Grande territory, a small river island, with approximately fourteen thousand hectares located at the mouth of the Tagus, whose predominantly agricultural landscape configures the essence of the Ribatejo province. It briefly presents some of its most characteristic elements - ethnography, sociology, architecture, economics and agriculture - that have shaped its landscape over the years. Naturally, the fluid and relational path of this study has amplified the scope of this reflection extending to the continuous transformation of territories and how this mutability constructs the architecture of both countryside and cities. It also attempts to understand how urban and rural realities interact with each other and with the paradigms of their time, influencing the construction of cultural and landscape values. In addition to the introduction and conclusions, this thesis is structured in two parts. The first part is divided into five chapters and addresses the socio-political contexts that have characterized the Tagus Valley over time. After a general view, the territorial use of Lezíria Grande is analysed. Some considerations about the current and future reality of the place are discussed in the second part of this study. This study also includes an essay on the process of the genesis and development of Lisbon in a fictional way.
