Accreditations
The Master's Curricular Plan extends interdisciplinarity to areas with which architecture works and cooperates, strengthening university and institutional relations, through a set of professors who are specialists in the different scientific areas that integrate it: architecture theory and history of architecture and urbanism, geography, landscaping, patrimony, olisipography, history, visual culture, anthropology, social research methods, archivistics and documental sciences.
The curricular programe consists of two semesters of an exclusively teaching component, with a total of nine mandatory CUs and one optional CU, followed by two semesters dedicated to dissertation or work project, having in parallel one mandatory CU and a second optional one.
The optional CUs are chosen from a set annually announced. The opening of the optional course units is subject to a minimum number of enrolments.
Students who successfully complete all the course units of the first year of the Masters may apply for a 2nd cycle Postgraduate Diploma in Architecture and Visual Culture in Lisbon.

Architectural Archives: From the Document to Dissemination
Considering the general objectives of this CU, students who have successfully completed it should be able to:
LG1. Conceptualizing the architectural records and differentiating between the types of producers and the range of their materials and records.
LG2. Identifying the main institutions in Portugal responsible for architectural archives.
LG3. Systematize the procedures to be used by the differing users of architectural archives, the reasons underlying the conditions for access and the main goals for granting public access to this documentation.

S3: Access and communication
Students must attend at least 60% of the predicted teaching hours. Assessment is continuous, including the submission of a written essay with oral presentation on one of the topics of the program.
Students approve with final mark of 10. Students with a negative evaluation have access to a final exam.

Lisbon: Ruptures and Continuities
In accordance with the overall objectives of the Curricular unit Lisbon: ruptures and Continuities want to:
LO1. The students identify, analyze and interpret the most relevant events of different periods under study.
LO2. The students compare and distinguish the architectural constructions and the most paradigmatic town planning operations from the point of view of ruptures and continuities.
LO3. Let the students evaluate and criticize the thinking and making of the city today.

City Through Time
To understand the main changes in urban space and cities social dynamics from mid-18th century up to the end of the 20th century, namely:
a) the different ideals of urban design, public space and architectural design;
b) the 19th century metropolitanization process; utopias and problems stemming from industrialization and new sanitary ideals; the urban project conceived by the architects of the Modern Movement and its later critique;
c) how images and representations of the city change and their weight in urban politics and the transformation of the urban fabric;
d) the presented case studies;
e) groups? dynamics and main social interactions;
f) the dilemmas concerning public order and security;
g) the ?social question? and the diversity of answers it has raised.
To apply the acquired knowledge and develop critical skills by discussing sources, theoretical texts and writing a final essay
I. Changes in urban space (18th/20th century)
1) The city and its representations in the context of the Enlightenment. The reconstruction of Lisbon: urban morphology, architecture and public spaces.
2) The 19th century metropolitanization process. Paris.
3) Representations of the industrial and sanitary city vs. the metropolitan ideal. The socialist utopia; urban design in the end of the 19th century. Barcelona and Lisbon.
4) The urban project of the Modern Movement: dissemination, criticism and drift. Urban morphology, architecture, and public spaces.
5) From the recovery of historical forms to the city of spectacle. Perception, conceptions and experiences of space.
II. Urban actors and urban experiences (18th to 20th century)
1) Industrialization, urbanization and social dynamics.
2) Conflicts and interactions: urban elites and working classes.
3) The dilemmas of security: norm and order in public spaces.
4) The ?social question? in the city.
5) Urban identities and sociabilities.
The final assessment takes the preparation and participation of seminars into account (20%), but is mainly defined on the basis of the written essay (80%) presented and discussed in class.

Heritage and Tourism
This course offers a socio-historical approach to the topic: ?tourism and heritage?. This course has two main objetives : 1) to provide a general understanding of the history of tourism and tourist practices, highlighting in particular the relationship to other fields of the historical research: social history, urban history, the history of culture, the history of techniques; 2) to examine the social and political uses of the notion of heritage from the XIXth century and its progressive enlargement, particularly in tourist contexts. The course adopts a relatively broad chronological framework (from the XVIIIth century to the XXth century) and has a strong multi-disciplinary scope (history, sociology, anthropology and geography).

2. The origins of tourism: viagentes and tourists in Europe (XVIIIth and XIXth century)
3. The differentiation of practices (XXth century)
4. Tourism and national identities
5. Transport and mobility: representations, practices and technology

7. The history of the notion of heritage
8. The invention of the "Historical Monument"
9. Heritage and culture in the XXth century
10. Conclusions
Continuous assessment will have three components: (1) oral and written presentation (1000 words) of a text chosen in the indicated bibliography; (2) oral presentation of an individual work conducted throughout the semester; (3) written work (10 000 words) on the same subject, submitted at the end of the semester. The weight of the different components in the final grade are: 1) 25%; 2) 25%;3) 50%.

At the end of the CU students should be able to:
1) recognize and use different types of methodological strategies, mastering its theoretical, methodological and technical requirements, in order to make adequate choices;
2) identify central problems in research design, from problem definition to conceptualisation, operationalization, observation and proposal writing;;
3) write a research and/or intervention project proposal.

Building Studies: Agents and Works in Lisbon
Upon completion, the student will:
1. Research the intellectual and material output of architecture, specifically, and other built-environment production operations in Lisbon in the 20th century;
2. Examine and explain the attending disciplinary and extra-disciplinary contexts (social-political, cultural, economic, of production and appropriation);
3. Identify the intervening agents in each key-moment, and research these and other, parallel agents, processes and objects, in order to expand and deepen he syllabus;
4. Research and examine in depth the main specific features of the myriad architectures of Lisbon in the twentieth century, their defining traits, the use, form and materiality values on which they stood, and their distinctive qualities, thus justifying their role when advancing operations of maintenance, transformation, repurposing and replacing the city?s urban fabric and its constituents.
The course syllabus includes:
1. Course introduction and syllabus presentation. Tools and Methods for Building Studies.
2. Agents and Works in the early decades of the 20th C.
3. Public Works, Private Works: The 1930s.
4. Housing: Homes and Flats in the 1940s.
5. New Agents and New Works in the Post-war.
6. The 1960s and 1970s: Light and Shadows.
7. Actors and Proposals for Architecture in Lisbon in the final decades of the 20th century.
The student is required to attend at least 60% of class hours in this course. Assessment is continuous, including the submission of a written essay with oral presentation.
The research exercise centres on the archives of the Municipality of Lisbon. Students approve with final mark of 10. There is no final exam.

Architectural Sources and Knowledge Creation
Considering the general objectives of this CU, students who have successfully completed it should be able to:
LG1. Mastering the theoretical foundations underlying architectural archives acquisition policy and acquiring the skills needed for evaluate them and becoming familiar with the basic legislation.
LG2. Understanding how architectural archives are organized, the characteristics and problems, and how they are carried out in a variety of contexts.
LG3. Recognizing the criteria underlying the development of documentary description and how to properly follow standards for said description of architectural archives.
LG4. Determine the main causes for deterioration of the different existing formats of architectural records, and to effectively design appropriate strategies for addressing the problem.
LG5. To highlight the key importance of the study of primary architectural sources to contribute to knowledge creation through research.

Students must attend at least 60% of the predicted teaching hours. Assessment is continuous, including the submission of a written essay with oral presentation on one of the topics of the program.

Geography and Landscape
According to the general objectives of the Geography and Landscape course it is intended:
1. To understand the role of space humanities, namely geography and landscape, in the development of urban planning and architectural design activities.
2. To analyze the relationship between the natural context and the Lisbon city form by reading the physiography of the territory and understanding the functioning of natural systems.
3. To analyze the cartographic representation of the city of Lisbon over time, as well as produce new thematic cartography, through the use of geotechnologies and online spatial information, which are simple and free to use.
4. To understand the natural and cultural ecological structure of the city of Lisbon taking into account its evolution in continuity and change.

Architects in Lisbon: Culture and Praxis in the 20th Century
Upon completion of the course, the student will:
1. Identify key moments of intellectual and material production of architecture, specifically, and other built-environment production operations, more broadly, in Lisbon in the twentieth century;
2. Examine and explain the disciplinary and extra-disciplinary contexts (social-political, cultural, economic, of production and appropriation) that frame each key-moment chosen for discussion in the course;
3. Identify the agents that operated in each key-moment discussed in the course;
4. Recognise the main specific features of the myriad architectures of Lisbon in the twentieth century, their defining traits, the use, form and materiality values on which they stood, and their distinctive qualities, thus justifying their role when advancing operations of maintenance, transformation, repurposing and replacing the city?s urban fabric and its constituents.

2. Tradition, Modernisation and Modernism: Tensions and Experimentation in the 1920s.
3. Building a Capital for the New State (Estado Novo): Pragmatism and Fantasy in Public and Private Initiatives.
4. The Years of Nationalism and (Late) Imperialism: Politics of Architecture in the 1940s.
5. Contagious Modernism: The Municipality of Lisbon, Architects and City-makers in the Post-war.
6. Industrial-scale Modernism: Appropriation, Popularisation and Reactions, Building Industry and Architecture in the 1950s and 1960s.
7. Culture, Context, (Exposed) Concrete and, once more, Tradition: Architects in Lisbon, In- and Outward Gazing.
8. Architects and Capitalism in Lisbon in the 1970s.
9. After Modernism: Plurality and Contradictions, between Revolution and Europe.
10. Around ?98: Architects? Affirmation and Internationalisation in Lisbon.
The student is required to attend at least 60% of class hours in this course. Assessment is continuous, including the submission of a written essay with oral presentation.
Students approve with final mark of 10. There is no final exam.

From Analogic to Digital: Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Analysis and Meaning of Images

Continuous assessment:
Active participation in the seminars (40%).
Written essay (maximum 20 pages) on one of the themes discussed in the sessions (60%), related to the individual project for the final digital audiovisual product.

The students must achieve the following learning objectives (LO)
- The ability to formulate a relevant research problem and design the respective methodology.
- Research and critical abilities.
- Capacity for critical reflection and logical-scientific reasoning
- Written and oral communication skills with conceptual and academic rigor.
1. Seminar presentation. Master dissertation rules.
2. Research projects ideas and models. To identify and formulate the study object.
3. Research project supervision (objectives, theory, methodology, bibliography).
4. Theoretical framework resources and bibliography.
The Thesis will be publicly defended, and the technical, written, oral presentation and argumentation components will be evaluated. The Thesis should be delivered following the norms and deadlines established by Iscte.
