Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon is a public institution of university education created in 1972. In 2010, the Institute implemented a new organizational structure and became a medium-sized public higher education institution, composed of the following decentralized organizational units: 4 Schools, 16 Departments and 8 Research Units.
The scientific and pedagogical identity of Iscte as an institution of knowledge in the university system in Portugal has developed around the disciplines that made and continue to make the reputation of the university. These fields laid the groundwork of Iscte’s foundation: Management, Finance, Accounting, Economics, Quantitative Methods, Anthropology, Social Psychology, Sociology, History, Political Science and Public Policy, Information Technology and Architecture. These areas are organized among four schools: School of Social Sciences (ECSH); School of Sociology and Public Policy (ESPP); School of Management (IBS); and School of Technology and Architecture (ISTA).
The Iscte campus is located in the center of Lisbon. It contains four buildings (around 45,000 m2), one of which is the winner of a Valmor prize, the most-renowned Portuguese award in architecture. Access to the campus is free and open to all. The Iscte Library, which specializes in the areas of social, human, business and technological sciences, has as its main objective to support all the sectors of activity at the Institute, providing textual resources in the best conditions of use for the performance of the functions of teaching, research, continuous education and cultural expansion.
With approximately 9600 students in undergraduate (44%) and post-graduate (56%) programs, 390 full-time teaching staff, 390 researchers and 270 non-teaching staff, Iscte prides itself on being one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in Portugal. On account of the high demand, Iscte has always filled all of its available spots for students.
Iscte maintains a high employment rate among its graduates, reaching close to 100% for the majority of programs. Many of its former students are currently employed in roles of high responsibility in companies, institutions and governmental bodies. This fact confirms not only the prestige of the Institution, but also the quality of the teaching it administers.
With regard to community service, the university has established connections to multiple businesses and governmental and civil service organizations through the professors and graduates of Iscte. It participates in the operations of three entities with the purpose of transferring knowledge to society: AUDAX-Iscte – Center for Entrepreneurialism and Innovation; INDEG-Iscte – Executive Education; IPPS – Institute for Social and Public Policy. These centers promote entrepreneurialism, consulting, and the education of executives for not only private companies, but also public entities and non-profit organizations.
