A infecção pelo HIV e o prognóstico da SIDA continua sendo uma preocupação mundial. Na tentativa de prevenir o surgimento de novos casos, além de cuidados diretos de saúde, programas de prevenção, educação sexual, etc., é importante entender as motivações, a predisposição comportamental e as atitudes do indivíduo, principalmente aquelas relacionados à prevenção e a sexualidade. Segundo a Teoria do Foco Regulatório (TFR, Higgins et al., 2001) as pessoas são motivadas a comportaremse de maneiras diferentes conforme o resultado pretendido, segundo uma autorregulação individual com mecanismos distintos: o foco em prevenção: orientado para evitar resultados negativos e o foco em promoção: orientado para alcançar resultados positivos. As atitudes dos indivíduos diante de um objeto referem-se a uma avaliação (positiva ou negativa). As atitudes não são observáveis, mas podem ser inferidas a partir dos comportamentos. Os comportamentos, por sua vez, são disposicionais e passíveis de controle pelo indivíduo (apresentação dos desejáveis e inibição dos indesejáveis). Realizamos um estudo transversal, com 263 participantes portugueses, média de idades 24,80 anos (DP = 4,50), para testar uma hipótese de que indivíduos motivados para a prevenção tenham atitudes mais positivas com relação aos preservativos (nas dimensões: confiança, prazer, estigma de identidade, embaraço no uso, na compra e na soma destas dimensões). Sendo esta associação mediada pela restrição do seu comportamento sexual, devido a importância do autocontrole para a exibição do comportamento desejável. Verificamos que a restrição do comportamento sexual medeia a associação entre o foco em prevenção e o embaraço na negociação e uso de preservativos (H5). As outras hipóteses não foram confirmadas. A restrição do comportamento sexual associa-se significativamente nas dimensões estudadas das atitudes, exceto em relação ao embaraço na compra de preservativos.

In an attempt to prevent the emergence of new cases, in addition to direct health care, prevention programs, sex education, etc., it is important to understand the motivations, behavioral predisposition and attitudes of the individual, especially those related to prevention and sexuality. According to the Regulatory Focus Theory (TFR, Higgins et al., 2001), people are motivated to behave in different ways according to the desired result, according to an individual self-regulation with distinct mechanisms: focus on prevention: oriented to avoid negative results and the focus on promotion: oriented to achieve positive results. The attitudes of the individuals before an object is an evaluation (positive or negative). Attitudes are not observable, but can be inferred from behaviors. Behaviors, in this turn, are dispositional and controllable by the individual (presentation of the desirable and inhibition of the undesirable ones). We carried out a cross-sectional study with 263 Portuguese, mean age 24,80 years (SD = 4,50), to test a hypothesis that individuals motivated for prevention have more positive attitudes towards condoms (in the dimensions: confidence, pleasure, stigma of identity, embarrassment in the use, purchase and sum of these dimensions). This association is mediated by the sexual restraint, due to the importance of the self-control to the desirable behavior. We found that the restriction of sexual behavior mediates the association between the prevention focus and the embarrassment in the negotiation and use of condoms (H5). The other hypotheses were not confirmed. The restriction of sexual behavior is significantly associated with the studied dimensions of attitudes, except in relation to the embarrassment in the purchase of condoms.
