O presente estudo aborda a estreita relação existente entre a fotografia artística contemporânea e a Antropologia, via discussão a respeito da tradição dos atlas fotográficos de tipos humanos. De forma concreta, parte-se da análise de dois projectos artísticos contemporâneos – Exactitudes, de Ari Versluis e Ellie Uyttenbroek; e Paris New York Shanghai, de Hans Eijkelboom – que, como diversos outros projectos artísticos actuais, reivindicam afinidades com as ciências sociais e mais, com a Antropologia. Sem o pressuposto de criar um comparativo entre atlas antropológicos e atlas artísticos, o objectivo foi compreender como se constroem, na arte contemporânea, as trocas e a atribuição de novos significados a questões e modelos tradicionalmente antropológicos. Dentre os conteúdos aprofundados estão a ideia de tipo humano, a relação individualidade versus massa e formas de representação do “outro”, temas que foram levantados visando a compreensão do uso do retrato fotográfico e do formato atlas para discutir estas abordagens nos dois estudos de caso seleccionados.

The present study focuses on the close relationship between contemporary art photography and Anthropology, via discussion of the tradition of the photographic atlas of human kinds. Concretely, we start from the analysis of two contemporary art projects - Exactitudes, Ari Versluis and Ellie Uyttenbroek; and Paris New York Shanghai, Hans Eijkelboom - which, like many other current artistic projects, claim affinity with the social sciences and more with Anthropology. Without the assumption of creating a comparative atlas anthropological and artistic atlas, the aim was to understand the intensity of exchanges and new meanings given to issues traditionally anthropological models and by the contemporary visual artists specifically for creative artists of selected case studies. Among the contents are deepened the idea of human kind, the relationship individuality versus mass and forms of representation of the "other" issues that have been raised with a view to understanding the use of the photographic portrait and atlas format to discuss these approaches in the selected cases.
