Reúne-se nesta colectânea um conjunto de estudos de dimensão e natureza diversa que têm como objecto figuras e problemas da história do comunismo na Europa e em Portugal, na sua maior parte centrados no período de existência da III Internacional (1919-43). Sendo uma época de apogeu mas também de crises do movimento operário de inspiração marxista, este período revelou a sobredeterminação do conflito de classe, analisado por Marx ao nível do modo de produção, por contradições nas esferas política e cultural que, nos anos 30, tornaram decisivo o antagonismo fascismo-antifascismo. Através dos casos concretos analisados, procura-se pôr em relevo o processo contraditório de apreensão teórica e de resolução estratégica deste problema pelo movimento comunista. Os artigos estão agrupados em oito secções. A primeira, a propósito dos 150 anos do Manifesto Comunista, tenta colocar o “problema geral” da não coincidência entre o conflito de classe ao nível económico e os problemas políticos que se colocaram ao movimento operário no século XX. Na segunda secção incluem-se dois textos acerca do problema do fascismo e do antifascismo na Internacional Comunista. A terceira contém artigos biográficos acerca de três figuras (Clara Zetkin, Nicolau Bukharin e Maurice Thorez) que, em momentos diferentes, tiveram papel de relevo no comunismo de entre guerras. Com os textos incluídos na secção IV, abordei o tema “comunismo e antifascismo” em relação a Portugal, em termos de sínteses gerais e em diferentes perspectivas. No quinta, sob a epígrafe “Fascismo, antifascismo e Estado Novo”, incluem-se artigos e recensões nos quais está presente o problema da integração do regime salazarista na problemática dos fascismos, a experiência da Oposição antifascista em Portugal e ainda a “polémica dos historiadores” na Alemanha. Concentrei nas últimas secções, em especial na sexta, a maior parte dos textos de carácter analítico ou biográfico, e ainda de polémica, sobre história do PCP. Na sétima secção aborda-se a questão da contribuição comunista para a cultura antifascista e para a génese da revolução democrática de 1974-75, fazendo referência ao movimento neo-realista e tendo em conta polémicas recentes. Finalmente, na oitava secção, inclui-se um trabalho recente de discussão da análise da revolução de Abril na obra de Nicos Poulantzas.

This collection of writings puts together essays, articles and reviews about figures and problems in the history of communism in Europe and in Portugal, most of them centred on the period of the Third International (1919-1943). Although these were the high days of the Marxist inspired working class movement, the period also revealed specific effects of cultural and political contradictions that Marx had not analyzed, and which were relevant for the conflict between Fascism and Anti-fascism. The texts try to sketch different ways in which these problems were apprehended and managed by the communist movement. The texts are grouped into eight chapters or sections. The opening essay, written on the occasion of the Communist Manifesto’s 150th birthday, sets the “general problem” of the non coincidence between the class conflict at the economic level and the political problems the working class movement had to face during the course of the twentieth century. Chapter 2 comprises two texts about fascism and anti-fascism in the Comintern. In Chapter 3 biographical articles are enclosed about three personalities from different generations (Clara Zetkin, Nicolai Bucharin and Maurice Thorez) who played important roles at different moments in the history of interwar communism. The texts in chapter 4 put together three different syntheses, under diverse perspectives, about the problem “communism and anti-fascism” when refered to the Portuguese experience. Chapter 5 is composed from articles and book reviews concerning the relationship between the Portuguese dictatorships and classical fascisms, the anti-fascist Resistance in Portugal and the German “Historikerstreit”. An article about the British diplomatic reports on the formation of the Portuguese “New State” is also included. Most of the texts of biographical, analytical or polemical character concerning directly the history of the PCP are concentrated in chapters 6 and 7. Chapter 7, taking into account recent polemics arisen by the work of François Furet, envisages the question of the communist contribution to Portuguese culture through the movement of “neo-realismo” and its influence in the origins of the “carnations’ revolution”. The last chapter is specifically concerned with the events of 1974-75 in Portugal and contains one recent article dedicated to the analysis of these events in the work of Nicos Poulantzas.
