Markets, London Stock Exchange, BME – Bolsa y Mercados Españoles, MSCI IMI SECTOR
porém seria sobretudo no curto prazo.
o do Turismo e Financeiro.

The main objective of this work is to study the impact of terrorist attacks on financial markets,
specifically in the stock and foreign exchange markets. In the first phase, the main indices of
the North American and European stock markets are used as indicators. Another indicator, the
evolution of the exchange rates between the currencies Dollar, Euro and Pound Sterling, will
be studied. Also highlighting the impact in sectoral terms, that is, analyze some sectors of
economic activity that may be influenced by terrorist attacks. In a final phase, it is tried to
analyze the possible effects to Portugal if it were the subject of a phenomenon of these.
The analysis is based on qualitative methods, with graphical references and tables available on
several database platforms (FRED, Euronext, Bloomberg Markets, London Stock Exchange,
BME - Bolsa y Mercados Españoles, MSCI IMI SECTOR INDEXES and Banco de Portugal)
within a maximum period of 10 years (2008-2018). A questionnaire is also carried out in order
to speculate on possible impacts on the portuguese financial markets if Portugal were to be the
target of a terrorist attack.
The results suggest that terrorist attacks do not influence the stock market in the short and long
term. While in the exchange market there is currency devaluation in the short term and there is
no long term impact. As for the sectors most affected, the financial sector, the energy sector
and the technology sector stand out. Regarding the effects to Portugal, the results obtained by
questionnaire, would be visible in the stock and exchange markets, but would be especially in
the short term. The sectors most likely to be influenced are Tourism and Finance.
