As histórias de migração da Venezuela e de Portugal estão ligadas desde o início do século XX, período durante o qual o país caribenho recebeu um grande contingente de cidadãos portugueses que fugiam de uma Europa enfraquecida e autoritária. Passado menos de um século, atualmente assistimos ao desenvolvimento de um fenômeno completamente oposto: a saída de milhares de venezuelanos em direcção a Portugal, motivados por uma grave crise que assola o campo institucional, económico, político e social da Venezuela há mais de 19 anos. O objetivo desta investigação, de orientação qualitativa, é caracterizar este fluxo migratório que tem sido observado de forma acentuada, mas que permanece praticamente inexplorado do ponto de vista académico. Examinamos mediante uma exploração bibliográfica e analítica a história migratória venezuelana, a crise pela qual atravessa o país, as especificidades do panorama europeu de migração e relevantes conceitos teóricos tanto no tópico da migração como da integração. Com base nestes dados, focamo-nos nas experiências de dez imigrantes venezuelanos em Portugal, que oferecem a sua visão sobre os motivos que os levaram a emigrar, as razões pelas quais escolheram o país luso como destino e o processo de adaptação e integração. Os resultados empíricos poem em causa o discurso do governo venezuelano e apontam ao colapso gradual da Venezuela, uma situação que obriga muitos a deixar o país em busca de melhores condições de vida do outro lado do Atlântico, condições que Portugal consegue oferece-lhes a níveis mais além do político, social ou económico.

The migratory records of Venezuela and Portugal have been linked since the beginning of the 20th century, a period during which the Caribbean country received a large influx of Portuguese citizens fleeing from a weakened and authoritarian Europe. Less than a century later, we are now witnessing the development of the opposite phenomenon: the departure of thousands of Venezuelans in the direction of Portugal motivated by a crisis that has struck the Venezuelan institutional, economic, political and social environment for more than 19 years. The objective of this qualitative research is to characterize this migratory flow, which has been observed in an accentuated way, but which remains practically unexplored from an academic point of view. Through a bibliographic and analytical exploration, we examine the Venezuelan migratory history, the crisis the country is going through, the specificities of the European migratory panorama as well as relevant theoretical concepts in the field of both migration and integration. Based on these data, we focused in depth on the experiences of ten Venezuelan immigrants in Portugal, who offer their perception on the reasons for emigrating, the reasons why they chose Portugal as a destination and their process of adaptation and integration. Empirical findings call into question the discourse of the governing party pointing to the gradual collapse of Venezuela, a situation that forces many to leave the country in search of better living conditions on the other side of the Atlantic, conditions that Portugal achieves to provide at levels that go beyond the political, social or economic.
