As questões de género na Guiné-Bissau são indissociáveis das dinâmicas políticas e espelham e enformam o funcionamento das instituições do país. Num contexto de dominação institucional masculina marcada por tensões, conflitos e violências de vária ordem, mas também por negociações e alianças, o enfoque sobre os homens e as masculinidades pretende trazer à luz do debate sobre as causas dos conflitos, a dimensão de género que tem marcado as relações de poder na Guiné-Bissau. Através da trilogia multidirecional de "Género, Violências e Instabilidade Política", tentamos a conceptualização da "cultura di matchundadi", uma expressão de masculinidade hegemónica, com base na relação de cumplicidade existente entre estes três domínios teóricos e da prática social, para compreender a forma como a "cultura di matchundadi" se torna proeminente para a análise da conflituosidade e das instabilidades, nomeadamente a política e a institucional, que têm assolado a formação do Estado Guineense. Ao mesmo tempo, entendemos que são as mesmas as violências que penetram e provocam a debilitação das instituições e impedem o normal funcionamento do Estado, da política e da economia e aquelas que alimentam as tradições e costumes que garantem a submissão de certos indivíduos - essencialmente mulheres - dentro das pertenças étnicas, religiosas e da família.

Gender issues in Guinea-Bissau cannot be disembedded from the political dynamics; in fact, they largely mirror and shape the functioning of the country’s institutions. In a context of male institutional domination marked by different kinds of conflicts, violence and tensions, as well as by negotiations and alliances, focusing on men and masculinities aims at bringing to light the debate on the causes of the conflicts, the gender dimension which has marked the power relationships in Guinea-Bissau. Through the multidirectional trilogy of "Gender, Violences and Political Instability", we try to conceptualize the "cultura di matchundadi" (hegemonic masculinity) based on the relationship of complicity between these three domains of theoretical and social practice, and comprehend the ways in which the "cultura di matchundadi" becomes crucial to analysing the conflicts and the instabilities, namely political and institutional, which have affected the formation of the Guinean state. At the same time, we consider that the kind of violence that infiltrates and weak institutions and prevents the normal functioning of the state, the politics and the economy, is the same as that which feeds into the traditions and habits that assure the submission of certain individuals - women especially - within the ethnic, religious and family affiliations.
