A preocupação é geral e manifesta todos os dias sob as mais diversas formas neste início do século XXI: o que será de nós, humanos, com a progressiva tecnicização dos ambientes mais íntimos e dos nossos corpos e mentes? Partindo desta ansiedade contemporânea fez-se uma recolha de narrativas intergeracionais, de membros de quatro famílias de estatuto social elevado, com historial de residência na cidade do Porto pelo menos desde o final do século XIX. As memórias e trajetórias de vida de cada um - e de todos - são ressonâncias das condicionantes, preocupações, estratégias e antecipações individuais e sociais vividas no quotidiano doméstico e da sua intimidade pessoal; foram analisadas sob o prisma das interferências tecnológicas nos indivíduos - e dos respetivos objetos que as induzem, que se fizeram presentes na história de cada narrador. Seguem-se os percursos cronológicos, com a entrada em cena tanto de novidades dispendiosas, como de tecnologias low-cost para uso doméstico ou pessoal. Trata-se de um contributo para o debate sobre o ser humano no presente e no futuro, pois a ampliação de capacidades e competências proporcionada pela tecnologia de uso pessoal é sedutoramente irrecusável - agora.

From the beginning of the 21st Century, a universal concern makes itself present across the board: what will become of us, humans, undergoing the technicisation of the most intimate and inner realms of body and mind? A recollection of inter-generational narratives has been taken to address this question encompassing the anxieties of contemporary life. The memory and trajectory of members from four upper-class families living in the city of Oporto since the last half of the 19th century have been chosen to guide through the individual as well as social limitations, preoccupations, strategies and anticipations of daily household life and personal intimacy. These have been analyzed under the scope of technological interference on individuals - and of the objects correspondingly inducing that very interference on the story of each narrator. Chronological accounts follow with the presentation of costly novelties and low-cost technologies for the household and personal use. This work is a contribution to the debate of the human in present and in future given that the amplification of skills and competences endeavored by technology necessarily confers it a mesmerizingly irrefusable character - for now.
