Testámos 56 participantes com a hipótese de que, a eventualidade de um exogrupo se juntar à mesma categoria superior do endogrupo, é alvo de dois processos de avaliação distintos: enquanto a afirmação da entrada do exogrupo depende do grau em que este se aproxima dos objectivos máximos da categoria superior, a exclusão preventiva de um exogrupo desviante depende da violação de objectivos mínimos. Os resultados confirmaram que a prototipicalidade relativa de Portugal comparativamente com a Turquia esteve relacionada negativamente com a apreciação da entrada da Turquia na União Europeia (UE). No entanto, os participantes que foram induzidos a uma predisposição mental para padrões mínimos, estiveram mais a favor da exclusão da Turquia do ingresso à UE do que os participantes com uma predisposição para padrões máximos. Esta predisposição foi mediada pelo aumento da percepção da Turquia como violadora de objectivos mínimos, onde a relação entre a prototipicalidade e a afirmação foi mediado pela aproximação de objectivos máximos

We tested 56 participants the hypothesis that outgroups trying to enter a superordinate group that includes the ingroup are target of two different evaluation processes: while affirmation of the outgroup’s joining should depend on how much it approaches maximal goals of the superordinate group, preventive exclusion of a deviating outgroup should depend on minimal goal violations. Results confirmed that relative ingroup prototypicality of Portugal as compared to Turkey was negatively related with appreciation of Turkey entering the European Union (EU), but participants that were primed in an unrelated task to focus on minimal standards were more in favor to exclude Turkey from any future possibility to join the EU than participants primed to focus on maximal standards. The effect of this mindset-priming was mediated by increase in perception of Turkey as violating minimum goals of the EU whereas the relation of prototypicality and affirmation was mediated by approach of maximum goals.
