Massangano foi palco de alguns acontecimentos importantes da História de Angola. A ocupação do território sob o comando de Paulo Dias de Novais, período de fundação da vila, e a invasão holandesa, durante a qual abrigou os portugueses em fuga, contribuíram para que lhe fosse atribuída uma carga simbólica particular e justificaram, mais tarde, o valor patrimonial concedido a edifícios e espaços mais significativos. A manutenção deste estatuto pelo governo angolano permite projectar a sua futura inclusão num roteiro turístico mais alargado, percepcionado como possível factor de desenvolvimento para a região. Este património de matriz colonial serviu-me de referência para duas linhas de investigação e reflexão. Uma, em que apoiada na etnografia, me propus conhecer alguns aspectos da vida na povoação, perceber o significado que assumem para os seus habitantes, procurando descortinar outros patrimónios. Outra, em que procurei explorar questões de memória quer na sua construção, quer na sua integração na actualidade, focalizada na natureza histórica de Massangano, e sustentada pelo conteúdo dos documentos históricos. Da primeira, resultou a revelação de uma cartografia em que prevalecem os lugares que a história mais recente do país marcou e as práticas e crenças que indicam uma estreita relação com a natureza. Da segunda, que contribuiu para esclarecer alguns dos aspectos ligados à história dos edifícios históricos, distingue-se a memória das celebrações realizadas em 2013 na igreja construída no século XVI.

Massangano was the stage for some of the more meaningful events in the history of Angola. The occupation of the territory under the command of Paulo Dias de Novais, when the village was founded, and the Dutch invasion, during which it hosted fleeing Portuguese, contributed to ascribe it a special meaning and has justified, the current acknowledgement of patrimonial value to some buildings and to the most significant spaces. The government has backed up the relevance of Massangano, leading to its contemporary inclusion in a broader touristic guide, a fact that has been considered as a possible tool for the development of the region. This heritage of Portuguese origin constituted a double guideline for my research. On one hand, grounded on ethnographic data, I aimed at analyzing some features of the life in the village, and at understanding their meaning and value for the local people, trying to identify other patrimonies. On the other hand, focused on its historical nature and based in the archive, I tried to explore issues of memory, both in its construction and in its current assimilation. The first approach allowed me to disclose a cartography of the places draft by the contemporary history of the country and of the practices and beliefs that point out to an intimate relation with nature. The second one, which has contributed to elucidate some of the aspects concerning the history of the historical buildings, highlights the memory of the celebrations that, in 2013, took place in the 16th-century church.
