As transformações ocorridas entre 1989 a 1991 revelaram-se fundamentais no processo que levou à queda do Muro de Berlim em 1989, ao fim do Comunismo na Europa de Leste e ao próprio colapso da URSS, afetando de forma decisiva a resolução dos conflitos político-militares na África Austral e a transição política e democrática em Angola. A nossa análise aos conteúdos do Jornal de Angola – órgão oficioso do regime de Luanda e do MPLA-PT – permitiu-nos compreender como o partido e o regime procuraram veicular a ideia de que a derrocada do Socialismo Real não representava uma ameaça para ambos, antes uma oportunidade de renovação da sociedade e da política angolana. Simultaneamente constatámos que ao comentar as mudanças em curso na política interna e externa da União Soviética e os reflexos destas mudanças em Angola, o Jornal de Angola manteve sempre numa perspetiva institucional, ou seja, adotou o ponto de vista quer das autoridades reformistas do PCUS quer do MPLA.

The changes occurred between 1989-1991 proved to be fundamental in the process that led to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, the end of Communism in Eastern Europe and the very collapse of the USSR, affecting decisively the resolution of political and military conflicts in Southern Africa and the political and democratic transition in Angola. Our analysis of the newspaper's content Jornal de Angola – unofficial organ of the regime of Luanda and the MPLA-PT – allowed us to understand how the party and the regime sought to convey the idea that the collapse of Real Socialism did not represent a threat to both, but indeed an opportunity for the renewal of Angolan society and politics. At the same ti me, we found that in the review of the ongoing changes in domestic and foreign policy of the Soviet Union and their impact in Angola, Jornal de Angola has always maintained an institutional perspective, that is, it adopted the point of view of the reformist authorities in Moscow and the MPLA.
