Com este trabalho pretende-se analisar um momento traumático da história portuguesa, o ultimato inglês de 1890, vendo de que forma esse acontecimento marcou o sentimento nacional da época e quais as suas consequências ideológicas duradouras. Apesar de não ter inaugurado o nacionalismo popular em Portugal, cujas origens devem ser procuradas nas comemorações camonianas de 1880, foi um ponto-chave desse tipo de manifestação nacionalista. Para entendermos como se chegou a esse ponto efectuámos uma análise da construção da nação portuguesa e dos sentimentos nacionais a ela ligados desde a Idade Média. Acreditamos que processos como os que são aqui descritos se inscrevem no tempo longo da história, pelo que defendemos a noção de nação orgânica. Quanto ao sentimento nacional que apelidamos de nacionalismo, cremos que nasceu político, resultante do liberalismo e do capitalismo industrial, contrapondo-se ao patriotismo, seu predecessor na história das nações.

We hope to accomplish, with this work, the analisys of a traumatic event in the Portuguese history, the British ultimatum of 1890. We intend to see how it influenced the national feeling at the time and its ideological consequences over time. The ultimatum doesn´t constitute the beginning of popular nationalism, whose roots must be searched in the commemorations of the Camões tricentenary in 1880, but is a key-point of that type of nationalism. To understand it, we analysed the building of the Portuguese nation as well as the correspondant national feeling from the Middle Ages on. We believe that the processes as described here are a fundamental part of the pattern of history, and that´s why we defend the notion of an organic nation. As for the national feeling we call nationalism, we believe it is political from its origins, a result of liberalism and industrial capitalism, in opposition to patriotism, its predecessor in the history of nations.
