A tese debruça-se sobre o que significa ser uma mulher kimbanguista. Reconhecendo que elementos como a religião, a família, a conjugalidade, as redes sociais e comunitárias estão nesta comunidade fortemente imbricadas. Procuro compreender como é que as mulheres percepcionam o seu papel e como esta conceptualização informa a sua experiência diária. Pretendo assim perceber no contexto migratório como se articulam e que ajustamentos existem entre o domínio dos significados e o da acção. Estas temáticas conduzem-nos para as relações de poder estabelecidas, não apenas no domínio do género, mas também entre a Igreja e o meio social na qual esta se encontra (bairro da Quinta da Fonte). Processos de adaptação emergem em vários domínios, moldando diferentes formas de pertença nas quais “África” e “Africanidade” são invocadas de forma cambiante. Levando-nos deste modo, a reflectir sobre questões como a cidadania, a modernidade, a tradição e a identidade, bem como o que estes significam na experiência quotidiana das mulheres nesta comunidade em Portugal.

The thesis focuses on what it means to be a kimbanguist woman. Acknowledging that religion, kinship, conjugality, social networks and community and are strongly intertwined, I seek to understand the way these women conceptualize their role and how this informs daily experience in the Diaspora. I aim to give a comprehensive understanding on women within the Kimbanguist Church in Portugal, thereby decodifying how women articulate diverse meanings and senses of belonging in the performance of their daily life and religious activities. Addressing these issues implies to shed light on power and gender relations as well as on relations constituted between the Church and the surrounding community (neighborhood). Adjustment processes emerge creating specific senses of belonging, where “womanhood” “Africa” and “Africanness” are differently invoked, enabling a reflection on themes such as citizenship, modernity, tradition and identity within the community and beyond it.
