O progresso das novas tecnologias, a generalização do conhecimento e o desenvolvimento da era da Informação tornam cada vez mais pertinente repensar as dinâmicas do sistema musical contemporâneo, nomeadamente os papéis do músico no século XXI perante uma nova morfologia social: a rede, com um carácter demarcadamente virtual. Do contacto com músicos portugueses, via entrevistapresencial, resultam testemunhos de práticas (trajectórias, estratégias reflexivas, relação com o espaço cibernético e apropriação das novas tecnologias) e representações(desdobradas em questões relativas à criatividade e autoria, bem como quanto a novos desafios trazidos ao presente e reflectidos para o futuro pelas novas tecnologias enovos media) face a dois universos que se entende possuírem um papel central nas sociedades contemporâneas: o digital e o virtual. Fazendo uso de tais informações, às quais se junta uma reflexão com base nos conceitos de artista total, de Vítor Sérgio Ferreira, artista em rede, de Vera Borges, new media artist, de Julian Sefton-Green, e outros contributos teóricos importantes, pretende-se chegar a conclusões acerca da importância de ferramentas como o home studioe o MySpaceno dia-a-dia dos músicos, destacando a multiplicidade de papéis como uma característica dos mesmos neste novo século.

With the progress of new technologies, the spread of knowledge and development of the Information age, it becomes ever more pertinent to rethink the dynamics of the contemporary music system and the roles of the musician in the 21st century within a new social morphology: the network, notably in its virtual essence. Personal interviews with Portuguese musicians have provided testimonies of practices (trajectories, reflexive strategies, relationship with cyberspace and appropriation of new technologies) and representations (deployed on issues related to creativity and authorship and also regarding fresh challenges raised by new technologies and new media and their reflection on the future) when dealing with two universes that are understood to play a central role in contemporary societies: digital and virtual. This information is used in conjunction with a discussion focused on the concepts of artista total(Vítor Sérgio Ferreira), artista em rede(Vera Borges), new media artist (Julian Sefton-Green) and other important theoretical contributions, with the aim of drawing some conclusions on the importance of toolslike home studioor MySpacein musicians’ daily lives, highlighting the multiplicity of roles as one of their characteristics in this new century.
