O impacto da exclusão digital na sociedade nunca foi tão grande como nos dias de hoje. Uma das suas configurações mais claras é a exclusão digital baseada na idade. A população sénior é afectada em grande proporção pela exclusão digital. Numa sociedade que tem como uma das principais tendências, a par com a crescente mediação da sociedade por tecnologia, o envelhecimento da população, torna-se especialmente importante compreender melhor esta forma de digital divide. É propósito desta dissertação aumentar o conhecimento sobre a relação que os utilizadores seniores estabelecem com a Internet percebendo quais os interesses e motivações dos idosos para a utilização da Internet e do Facebook, os seus usos. A nossa análise reflecte sobre os fenómenos de exclusão digital, da sociedade em rede e do envelhecimento da população e tenta compreender o que está na origem do afastamento dos mais velhos da Internet. Factores como questões de literacia, limitações biológicas associadas à idade, mas também uma muito referida falta de interesse, são alguns dos principais potenciadores desse afastamento. Através de um estudo qualitativo que recorre a entrevistas semi-estruturadas a seniores utilizadores da Internet e do Facebook concluímos que, mais do que procurar informação, os mais velhos procuram online acesso a relações e contactos pessoais e às suas memórias. Concluímos também que existe algum desinteresse dos mais velhos pelos conteúdos e contornos da tecnologia que poderá estar relacionado com a partilha geracional de determinados valores e preferências (Colombo e Arnoldi, 2007) que não estão representados na Internet, que é moldada por gerações com mais literacias digitais.

The repercussions of the digital divide in society are now greater than ever. One of its clearest configurations is the digital divide between young and old people. Senior citizens are affected to a great extent by the digital divide. In a society where one of the main trends, together with the increasing mediation of society through the use of technology, is the aging of the population, it becomes especially important to understand this form of digital divide. This study is intended to increase knowledge about the relationship between older users and the Internet by understanding what interests and motivations older people have in using the Internet and Facebook, and how they use them. Our analysis proposes a reflection on the digital divide, the network society and the aging of the population while also trying to understand what keeps older people from using the Internet. Factors such as literacy issues, age related biological limitations, and also an often mentioned lack of interest, are some of the major reasons for this estrangement. Our qualitative analysis of semi-structured interviews with older Internet and Facebook users concludes that, rather than seeking information online, older people try to get access to personal relationships, contacts and their memories. We also conclude that there is some lack of interest in the content and features of the technology. That lack of interest may be related to the sharing of some generational values and preferences (Colombo e Arnoldi, 2007) which are not represented on the Internet which in turn is mostly shaped by generations that are more digitally literate.
