Partindo de uma «mesa-redonda virtual» com 17 jornalistas que de algum modo se têm identificado ou têm sido identificados com a prática de jornalismo de investigação, procurou-se estabelecer o conceito, de modo a distingui-lo da investigação jornalística, prática transversal a todas as modalidades de jornalismo. Após uma incursão na história do jornalismo – no estrangeiro e em Portugal – onde se procurou localizar momentos fundadores do jornalismo de investigação – com algumas conclusões algo surpreendentes – questionaram-se semelhanças e diferenças entre a actividade do jornalista de investigação com a de detective (privado ou policial) e com a de historiador. Por fim, construiu-se uma grelha de definição devidamente fundamentada do conceito de jornalismo de investigação.

From a «virtual round-table» with 17 journalists who somehow have identified themselves or have been identified with the practice of investigative journalism, the Author sought to establish the concept in order to distinguish it from investigation in journalism, a practice that crosses all forms of journalism. After an incursion in the history of journalism – abroad and in Portugal – which sought to locate founding moments of investigative journalism – with somewhat surprising conclusions – the questions similarities and differences between the work of investigative journalism with the detective (private or of the police) and with the historian. Finally, the Author builds a grid of reasoned definition of the concept of investigative journalism.
