O valor estratégico dos Açores é invocado com frequência em debates públicos e académicos. Contudo, este não se encontra ainda definido sistematicamente. Esta tese tenta providenciar um estudo abrangente do significado estratégico deste arquipélago português, que olhe além de factores contextuais para descobrir padrões mais profundos, considerando-o enquanto localização estratégica entre 1430 e 2022. Perguntar como estas pequenas ilhas se enquadram nas grandes estratégias das grandes potências, bem como do pequeno Estado que tem soberania sobre elas, faz dos Açores um estudo de caso sobre “geografia estratégica” e, especificamente, sobre “insularidade estratégica”. Estes dois conceitos trazem valor aos estudos estratégicos e à nissologia, respectivamente, uma vez que iluminam tanto as características das pequenas ilhas na estratégia como o impacto da importância estratégica nas ilhas. Esta tese produz uma história estratégica das ilhas através de rastreamento de processo narrativo, utilizando principalmente fontes secundárias. Uma tipologia de papéis estratégicos é extraída deste estudo e aplicada ao ambiente estratégico atual (2022). Conclui-se que o principal impulsionador de valor estratégico dos Açores é historicamente a estratégia das grandes potências que dominam ou tentam dominar as vias marítimas do Atlântico. No entanto, assim que adquirem valor estratégico, os Açores também constrangem as estratégias dessas potências de formas inesperadas, até por capacitarem Portugal, um pequeno Estado, na sua relação com elas. Pressupõese que a mesma lógica se aplique a outros territórios insulares bem como aos Açores no futuro.

The strategic value of the Azores is often invoked in public and academic discussions. Yet there has been little attempt at defining it systematically. This thesis attempts to provide a comprehensive study of the strategic significance of this Portuguese archipelago, looking beyond contextual factors to uncover deeper patterns, by examining it as a strategic location from 1430 to 2022. Asking how these small islands fit into the grand strategies of great powers, as well as the small state that has sovereignty over them, turns the Azores into a case study in 'strategic geography' and, specifically, 'strategic islandness'. These two concepts bring value to Strategic Studies and Island Studies, respectively, since they illuminate both the unique characteristics of small islands in strategy and the impact of strategic significance on the islands. This thesis conducts a strategic history of the islands through narrative process tracing and using mainly secondary sources. A typology of recurring strategic roles is extracted from this historical survey and then read against the present strategic environment (2022). It finds that the main driver of strategic value of the Azores has been the strategy of the great powers that dominate or try to dominate Atlantic sea lanes. However, once they gain strategic value, the Azores also constrain the strategies of those great powers in unexpected ways, not least by empowering the small state of Portugal in its dealings with them. The same logic is expected to apply to other insular territories and to the Azores in the future.
