morphometry (VBM) ou voxel-based cortical thickness (VBCT).

The practice of mindfulness meditation has received increasing interest in neuroscience
research in recent years. This systematic review of the literature aims to identify and
summarize the available evidence concerning the effects of mindfulness meditation practice
on brain morphology. The hypothesis is that mindfulness practice may lead to changes in
brain morphology, particularly an increase in gray matter. Four databases (Scopus, PsycInfo,
Medline, and Google Scholar) were used to identify and collect articles from all longitudinal
and correlational studies with a control group, involving healthy individuals aged 18 to 65
years, where structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) was used to assess brain
morphology, with a specific focus on voxel-based morphometry (VBM) or voxel-based
cortical thickness (VBCT) studies. Of the 18 studies included, four were longitudinal and the
rest were correlational. Overall, the studies provide evidence of greater gray matter volume in
meditators in areas such as the hippocampus, inferior temporal gyrus, insula, orbitofrontal
cortex, middle temporal gyrus, and cerebellum, when compared to the control group. Out of
the 10 studies that analyzed the effect of the duration of practice on brain morphology, six
showed a correlation between the number of hours of practice and brain morphological
changes. Although the results are consistent with the initial hypothesis, the studies have some
limitations in terms of design, type of practice, and practice duration, highlighting the need
for more longitudinal studies with standardized methodology.
