Este trabalho final de Mestrado tem como principal objetivo ouvir o que os alunos têm a dizer sobre a sua retenção. Ou seja, o que é pretendido é saber a opinião dos mesmos em relação ao assunto e entender o que é que despoletou o insucesso escolar. Foram realizadas treze entrevistas a alunos adultos (todos com mais de 18 anos), que na grande maioria, frequentam Cursos de Formação de Adultos (CFA) e que já ficaram retidos pelo menos, um ano letivo completo. Foi possível identificar como principais causas atribuídas pelos entrevistados à sua retenção: razões intrínsecas (falta de interesse, de motivação e de estudo) e extrínsecas (mudança de país e a má influência dos colegas); as reações e o apoio dos familiares, nomeadamente os pais, também são fatores importantes, assim como o apoio dos professores. As principais consequências da retenção são: a mentalidade dos alunos muda normalmente para melhor, no entanto outros alunos consideram que foi um atraso e que perderam tempo.

This Master's final work has as its main objective to hear what students have to say about their retention. In other words, what is intended is to know their opinion on the subject and understand what triggered the school failure. Thirteen interviews were conducted with adult students (all over 18 years old), who mostly attend Adult Training Courses (CFA) and who have already been retained for at least one full academic year. It was possible to identify as the main causes attributed by the interviewees to their retention: intrinsic reasons (lack of interest, motivation and study) and extrinsic reasons (change of country and the bad influence of colleagues); the reactions and support from family members, namely parents, are also important factors, as is the support from teachers. The main consequences of retention aroe: the students' mentality usually changes for the better, however other students consider that it was a delay and that they have wasted time.
