Numa altura em que a crise sanitária é o assunto que monopoliza as discussões ao nível mundial, urge relembrar a maior crise que, juntamente à crise ambiental, caracterizou a segunda década do século XXI. A crise migratória do Mediterrâneo, de facto, já entrou na nossa realidade há alguns anos. Embora por causa da decrescente atenção por parte dos Mídias possa parecer uma questão do passado, os fluxos migratórios não pararam e não mostram sinal de parar. A origem destes fluxos, como os mesmos foram enfrentados no começo da crise e como são enfrentados agora, são interrogativos que vão ser trazidos à luz ao longo desta dissertação. Iremos evidenciar as maiores causas que os alimentam e as maiores problemáticas que se desenvolvem à volta, evidenciando eventuais lacunas no modelo de gestão da crise. As políticas da União Europeia em matéria de migração é o contexto em que se desenvolveram as medidas para enfrentar esta crise. Contudo, como ressaltará o estudo de caso focado no fluxo da rota central da Líbia para a Itália, a história de acordos bilaterais entre o país do norte da África e o país sul europeu influenciou significativamente a orientação destas medidas. As reflexões sobre os conceitos teóricos como as fronteiras, o fenómeno da globalização, o mar como meio de migração e a sustentabilidade, apoiarão a análise critica que visa determinar se o fenómeno migratório no Mediterrâneo está a ser gerido de maneira sustentável.

Nowadays COVID-19 pandemic is the subject that monopolizes worldwide discussions. However, we can’t stop considering the biggest crisis that, together with the environmental crisis, characterized the second decade of the 21st century. The migration crisis in the Mediterranean, in fact, has become part of our reality for already some years. Although, according to the Media, this may seem a matter of the past, the migratory flows have not stopped and show no signs of stopping. The origin of these flows, how they were faced at the beginning of the crisis and how they are faced now, are questions that will be brought to light throughout this dissertation. We will address the main factors that cause them and the major issues that develop around them, highlighting eventual gaps in the crisis management model. The European Union's migration policy is the context where there have been developed measures to deal with this crisis. However, we will focus on the central Mediterranean route migration flows from Libya to Italy to show how the bilateral agreements between the North African country and the southern European country significantly influenced the orientation of these measures. Reflections on theoretical concepts such as borders, the phenomenon of globalization, the sea as a migration channel and sustainability, will support the critical analysis aimed to determine whether the migration phenomenon in the Mediterranean is being managed in a sustainable way.
