Iscte featured in the 2025 Interdisciplinary Science Ranking

Iscte is once again included in the Interdisciplinary Science Ranking, published by Times Higher Education (THE) in partnership with Schmidt Science Fellows. The second edition analyses the engagement of more than 900 universities from 94 countries in interdisciplinary research.

The ranking is based on three dimensions:

  1. Inputs: funding dedicated to interdisciplinarity and collaboration with industry;

  2. Process: institutional policies and practices that support interdisciplinary work;

  3. Outcomes: scientific output and indicators from THE’s reputation survey.

In the 2025 edition, eight Portuguese institutions are featured. Iscte achieves its best performance in the Outcomes dimension, standing out for scientific production and research impact. The ranking is led by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Interdisciplinarity is a defining component of Iscte’s identity, reflected in its scientific organisation, which comprises eight research units, one associated laboratory, and five affiliated entities.

Among these structures, the following stand out:

  • Iscte-Knowledge and Innovation – Centre for Valorisation and Technology Transfer, created in 2020, which brings together Iscte’s research and innovation ecosystem under one building. Iscte-Knowledge and Innovation fosters collaboration between the social sciences, humanities and digital technologies through joint projects and the transfer of knowledge to public and private organisations and society at large;
  • Associated Laboratory: the Sociodigital Lab for Public Policy unites six Research Units promoting a unique interdisciplinary approach to the study of public policy, combining scientific knowledge from diverse and complementary areas in the social sciences and digital technologies to address contemporary social problems and global challenges.

Iscte is also a founding member of three collaborative laboratories with interdisciplinary research and innovation agendas: ABC (active and healthy ageing), COLABOR (work, employment and social protection), and SMARTFARM (digital agriculture).

Iscte’s presence in the ranking and strong performance in the Outcomes dimension reflect the consolidation of an institutional strategy driven by interdisciplinary research.
