Early Modern Portugal
LO1. To acquire a comprehensive knowledge about the history of Portugal in the period 1415-1640.
LO2. To identify and understand the main changes and continuities of this historical period.
LO3. To develop the ability to raise hypotheses and deepening historical issues.
LO4. To develop reading and textual analysis skills.
LO5. To develop creative communication skills.
PC1. The chronological, spatial and problematic framework.
PC2. Portugal in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries (Power and powers; Society; The economy; Foreign policy and international relations; Science, knowledge and culture).
PC3. The role of overseas expansion in the history of mainland Portugal.
The student has 2 different options:
(1) The ASSESSMENT THROUGHOUT THE SEMESTER, besides requiring a minimum 66% attendance, relies on three main elements: AV1. Written commentary on texts (worth 30% of the final grade). AV2. A written questionnaire covering the entire program (worth 60%). AV3. Regular follow-up of class activities (worth 10%).
(2) The FINAL EXAMINATION is a single written questionnaire (AV4), covering the entire program.

O processo de avaliação é baseado na realização de um trabalho de grupo com apresentação oral e de um teste de avaliação sobre todos os pontos do programa. O trabalho de grupo representa 35% da nota final. O teste representa 65%.
Para ambas as provas considera-se fundamental a assiduidade e participação nas aulas pois existe uma complementaridade entre as aulas teóricas onde é apresentada uma síntese da evolução da América Latina e os trabalhos de grupo onde os alunos estudam e apresentam uma síntese sobre um único país da região, à sua escolha.

This learning goals of this UC are:
1) acquisition of knowledge about the historical period covered by the program;
2) contact with bibliography and a limited number of sources;
3) aquisition of autonomy in order to de capable of doinh documentary analysis, synthesis and conducting small researchs;
4) development of the capacity of transmission research results.
0. "Revolution" and "Liberalism": the concepts.
1. Ancien Régime in Portugal. French invasions and english ocupation. The rupture of the Empire and its consequences.
2. Revolution and counterrevolution. Liberals and "miguelistas".
3. Constitutional issues: politics and citizenship. "Cartistas" and "setembristas". "Cabralistas". "Cabralistas".
4. Liberalism, public space and opinion
5. Territory and men.
6. From Brasil to Africa. The slave trade and its abolition.
7. Economica changes; the reform of the status of the land; industry; trade and financial aspects.
8. Urban and rural social tensions.
According to the General Regulation for Assessment of Knowledge and Skills of Iscte, the assessmente can be perfomed by two ways: assessment throughout the semester and assessment by final exam.
In the first period, the Assessment throughout the semester consist of:
- An oral exposition about a primary source (40%);
- A test, acompained by a cronology given by the teacher (60%).
There will be a final exam for the students who choose it.
In the second period, there is an assessment by final exam.

The final assessment consists of a working group whose assessment is worth 50% of the final, another test summative assessment which is worth 50% of the final grade.

Colonization and Decolonization: XIX-XX Centuries
At the end of the course the student should be able to:

LO2 - Identify and assess the major explanations for the phenomenon of European settlement started in mid-nineteenth century.
LO3 - Compare between the two major phases in the process of independence of former colonies: the American Wave and the Global Decolonisation following World War II.

LO5 - Understand the legacies of colonialism in colonized countries.
LO6 - Apply acquired knowledge in the analysis of historical sources.
LO7 - Describe and take an informed position on the debates evolving around the meanings of colonialism.

This Curricular Unit can be assessed by means of a assessment throughout the semester or a final exam.

Intership in Modern and Contemporary History
The learning objectives of the UC are:
OA1 - to provide the possibility of applying in practice the theoretical and methodological knowledge acquired during the course carried out so far.
OA2 - to enable students to come into contact with the labour market and thus help them to identify future career goals.
OA3 - to prepare students for future employment situations, enabling them to develop and apply the skills and knowledge acquired.
S 1 - Organisation of the student placement process in internship.
S 2 - Definition of the internship placement and schedule.
S 3 - Formalisation of the placement: preparation of protocol, identification of the external advisor, preparation of a work plan conjointly with the institution, definition of the internship general goals.
S 4 - Preparation to integrate the placement location: guiding sessions.
S 5 - Integration into the regular activities of the organisation, within their valence and teams.
S 6 - An internship report on the work carried out, including a characterization of the organization where the internship tool place.
S 7 - Presentation in a seminar on the activities carried out durinh the internship and critical assessment.
The evaluation will be based on two elements:
1 – Internship plan (1 – 2 pages) + final report of the internship (10-15 pages) done by the student - weight in the final assessment: 50%.
2 – Evaluation of the internship by the host entity (through the completion of a questionnaire) - weight in the final assessment: 50%.

According to the General Regulation for Assessment of Knowledge and Skills of Iscte, the assessmente can be perfomed by two ways: Assessment throughout the semester and Assesment assessment by final exam.
In the first period, The Assessment throughout the semester consists of 2 elements:.
. One element is as oral presentation of a historical source. Worth 40%.
. Another element is a written test . Worth 60%.
Alternatively, it can be done a final examination, assuming the same level of knowledge and skills.
In the second period, there is a final examination.
