The Master in Political Economy is distinguished by the analysis of contemporary economic issues with a high social impact. Topics like economic and social inequalities, international and European economic integration processes, capitalism’s cyclical crises, labour market regulation in the digital era, climate change and sustainability, and the role of finance in contemporary capitalism are at the core of this program. To study these topics, the master adopts a pluralistic and interdisciplinary approach, both in terms of theories and methods.
This is the first master degree in Political Economy in Portugal, following the recent international trend towards the establishment of new study programs in this area.
The Master is conducted in English and benefits from partnerships with international scholars and foreign universities that have similar programs. The program is oriented towards national and international students with undergraduate degrees in Economics, Political Science, International Relations or Sociology. As classes take place during the afternoon, the Master is oriented towards students who are not yet employed in a full-time job. Those already employed but available to attend classes during the day are also welcome.
Our master students are very active in terms of collaborative projects. Recently, they launched a student’s journal, with essays and opinion articles related to the field of political economy. All master students enrolled in the master’s in political economy are invited to contribute. The journal is accessible online here (https://pestudentsjournal.wixsite.com/home).
