The Department of Information Science and Technology (DCTI) was created in 1988 and is one of the three departments that make up the School of Technology and Architecture of the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL). Currently, DCTI is the largest department of ISCTE-IUL, with 59 faculty members with PhD. Despite being a young department in the national panorama, the faculty of DCTI was responsible for creating, with great success, several of the pioneering programs of the ISCTE-IUL School of Technology and Architecture (ISTA), namely those on Computer Science and Business Administration in 1989 and Telecommunications and Computer Engineering in 1998 (the first of its kind in Portugal).

The skills of the DCTI faculty are mainly focused on the scientific fields of Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Systems, Electronics and Telecommunications, and its members are responsible for the teaching of most courses in the 12 technological undergraduate and graduate programs of ISTA, whose employability exceeds 99% and is one of the best at the national level. This high level of employability is the result of an ongoing effort of the DCTI faculty members to adjust the curriculum structure and content of the various technological programs of ISTA, in a permanent liaison with the labor market and the best practices at the international level. For this, the main employers are frequently consulted in order to understand their needs and to reflect those needs in changes to be made to the curriculum of the programs. To achieve this objective, the proximity of the faculty members to companies, as well as the major national and international professional associations in the field, such as the Portuguese Engineering Association (OE), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), is of the utmost importance.

Besides the undergraduate and graduate programs of ISTA, the DCTI faculty is also responsible for teaching several other (more general) courses in the area of Information Science and Technology in programs under the responsibility of other schools at ISCTE-IUL.

In addition to the top-level pedagogical quality, recognized both nationally and internationally, the faculty members of DCTI also pursue top-level research and development activities in their respective areas in some of the most prestigious research centers in the country, among which are the Instituto de Telecomunicações (IT), the Centro de Investigação em Sistemas e Tecnologias de Informação Avançados (ADETTI) and the Instituto de Engenharia de Sistemas e Computadores (INESC).

The recognition of pedagogical and scientific capacities of faculty members of DCTI, is embodied in the high number of partnerships with other universities and companies (domestic and foreign), both in terms of student exchange programs, such as IAESTE and ERASMUS, and in terms of research and development projects – national and international – which are also typically done in partnership with other universities and companies.

The top-level scientific and pedagogical skills of the DCTI faculty members ensures the most advanced and stimulating learning environment in all courses where they teach, allowing students to develop their capabilities to the fullest in order for them to be able to face their professional future with confidence through a solid and modern training, recognized both at national and international levels.
