"The assessment of this curricular unit follows the semester-long modality and is based on the completion of an implementation project, carried out in groups, which allows students to apply the knowledge acquired in the digital management of construction and in the adoption of innovative methodologies, such as modular construction and prefabrication. Given its practical nature, the UC does not have a Final Exam.
1. Implementation Project (100%, in groups)
Students develop a group project that consists of defining and applying a strategy for a specific and well-defined problem. The project must include:
• Analysis of a scenario, preferably real, identifying challenges in a task, analysis of possible solutions and selection of one of them.
• Definition of an implementation plan, including technical, economic and cultural analysis.
• Testing of real implementation or through interviews and simulations.
• Preparation of a technical report, detailing the processes, information flows and decision-making, measured or expected impact and difficulties.

• Final presentation, in a synchronous session, where the applicability and learning outcomes are openly discussed.
2. Evaluation Criteria
The project will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
• Critical analysis and justification (30%) – Clarity in identifying problems and depth of analysis of digital solutions.
• Relevance and innovation of the proposal (30%) – Effective application of the methodologies and technologies explored.
• Quality of the technical report (20%) – Structure, coherence, and depth of the analysis.
• Practical demonstration and presentation (20%) – Clarity in the analysis and presentation of results and conclusions.

3. Feedback and Progression
Throughout the semester, students will have follow-up sessions and continuous feedback from instructors, ensuring the necessary guidance for the development of the project and allowing for adjustments.

The syllabus of the curricular unit is designed to provide students with a solid understanding of the principles, standards and practical tools that support digital collaboration in the construction sector, from a perspective of interoperability and neutrality in the use of software.
CP1. OpenBIM fundamentals, including interoperability, IFC history and alignment with international standards, such as the ISO 19650 series (BIM collaboration), EN ISO 7817 (Level of Information Need) and ISO 12006 (Information Classification).
CP2. Collaborative management in openBIM projects, including the use of BCF for communication and alignment with methodologies based on ISO 19650.
CP3. Collaborative management in openBIM projects including the use of BCF for communication.
CP4. Generation of IFC models in accordance with contractual and legal requirements and licensing processes using proprietary software and validation and correction tools, such as Blender/Bonsai.

The assessment of the curricular unit takes place throughout the semester and is made up of two distinct components: a theoretical component (1), which prepares students for the buildingSMART Foundations exam, and a practical component (2), which develops applied skills in interoperability and openBIM.
1.Theoretical Component (40%)
- It consists of carrying out an individual written test, focused on the fundamentals of openBIM and the key concepts covered in the curricular unit, aligned with the contents of the buildingSMART Foundations exam.
- This test will be carried out on the date of the first exam and can be repeated in the second phase, if necessary.
- A minimum grade of 9.5 is required in this component to pass the curricular unit.
2. Practical Component (60%)
- It consists of developing an individual project that simulates a realistic scenario, based on federated models provided by the teacher.
- Each student will receive a specific set of demands and requirements that they must meet, developing a complete workflow.
The project will include:
- Construction of digital models aligned with the requirements provided.
- Use of practical tools for data management, interoperability and information validation.
- Demonstration of the workflow developed through:
- A technical report, detailing the steps followed, tools used and results obtained.
- Completing a Common Data Environment (CDE) containing all elements of the workflow, including validated data, formats and tools used and final results.
- The project is presented through a video of up to 6 minutes, explaining how the workflow works.
The final grade will be calculated based on the weights of the two components, and it is necessary to reach a minimum grade of 9.5 in both for approval. There is no final exam, since the assessment throughout the semester covers the theoretical and practical objectives of the UC.

The course content introduces students to the Dynamo and Grasshopper visual programming tools, and allows for the exploration of complex shapes and workflow optimization. To equip students with these skills, the following course content is considered:

CP1: Introduction to visual programming, overview of Dynamo and Grasshopper, basic concepts and interface;

CP2: Generation of shapes and models through visual scripts with practical applications;

CP3: Potential of automation and data management;

CP4: Introduction to programming in Python in Dynamo and Grasshopper, PyRevit and RhinoInsideRevit;

CP5: Exploration and potential of calculations and simulation in parametric models, with subsequent extraction and manipulation of information;

CP6: Strategies for optimizing workflows through automation with practical examples and case studies.

In this course, Semester-Based Assessment is used, without a final exam. This strategy aligns with the Iscte-Sintra learning methodology, promoting autonomous work and task-based learning, which encourages students to conceive, develop, and build practical solutions to real-world problems.

Assessment will be conducted through four individual project deliverables throughout the semester:

The first deliverable will involve developing a visual script to generate a structure for a building or artwork.

The second deliverable will involve the continued development of the same script to generate other elements of the building or artwork, such as facades, prestressing systems, construction details, or others.

The third deliverable will involve using PyRevit or the RhinoInsideRevit plugin to create a Python script for modifying specific elements and/or automation. The fourth and final deliverable will be related to extracting information from the models, performing calculations and simulations, and demonstrating the optimization of the developed process versus the process without the use of scripting for Parametric Design.

None of the individual assessments can have a grade lower than 8 points. The four assessments have the same weight in relation to the final grade (25%), and it is necessary to achieve a minimum grade of 9.5 points in the weighted average to pass the course.

There is no final exam, given the extremely practical nature of the course and since the assessment throughout the semester ensures the fulfillment of its theoretical and practical objectives.

1. Practical Tests (40%, individual)
Students perform individual practical mini-tests in a computer laboratory that assess fundamental applied skills:
• Configuration and management of a Common Data Environment (CDE), including structuring folders, implementing file naming, access permissions, versioning and approval flows.
• Compatibility of specialty models, identification and resolution of interferences.
• Extraction of quantities and cost analysis, applying BIM uses of quantification and cost engineering.
• Verification of information conformity, ensuring adherence to project standards and requirements.
2. Collaborative BIM Implementation Project (60%, in group)
For 4 weeks, students participate in a simulated project, structured in teams that assume different roles in the implementation of BIM. The project takes place in phases, ensuring that all students experience the challenges of various stakeholders in the process:
• Week 1: BIM Definition and Planning – Preparation of the BIM Execution Plan (BEP), definition of workflows and organization of the CDE.
• Week 2: Information Management and Coordination – Model compatibility, interference analysis and collaborative management in the CDE.
• Week 3: Data Extraction and Decision Support – Application of BIM uses for quantification and cost engineering.
• Week 4: Assessment and Final Presentation – Final adjustments to the BEP, review of the CDE management and delivery of a technical report, presentation and discussion of the project.
Each student will go through different roles and responsibilities to develop a holistic view of implementing BIM in a real project.
UC Assessment Criteria
• Practical tests: Assessment of proficiency and accuracy in CDE configuration and management, model compatibility, data extraction and compliance with BIM standards.
• Collaborative project: Assessment of clarity and coherence in the implementation of the BEP, effectiveness of the organization, adaptability in the application of BIM uses and quality of the analysis presented in the final phase.
• A minimum grade of 9.5 in each component is mandatory.
Due to the practical nature of the UC, there is no room for assessment by Exam.

"Assessment is semester-long (ALS), with no exam. ALS has two components:
1 - Individual exercises assigned in class and completed in the following weeks, with a weight of 35%. 2 - Group project of up to 3 students, in which each group of students selects a technology or tool, explores it, and applies it to a specific problem, previously approved by the instructor.
