From 23 to 28 June 2025, the International Summer School "Smart Systems for Ambient Assisted Living: Healthcare and Environment" took place, an initiative led by Iscte – University Institute of Lisbon, with the support of the IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, Whymob, and the Institute of Telecommunications.
In addition to Lisbon, the Summer School was also held in Penha Garcia, in the municipality of Idanha-a-Nova, bringing together 19 international participants, including PhD and Master’s students as well as secondary school teachers, from various institutions and countries.
With a strong focus on interdisciplinarity, the programme explored the convergence of technology, healthcare and environment through lectures, workshops and hands-on activities in different settings. Participants had the opportunity to attend six keynote lectures, delivered both in person and online by experts from different countries, covering innovative topics in the fields of instrumentation, artificial intelligence, digital health and environmental monitoring.
The initiative also received support from the Municipality of Idanha-a-Nova and included sessions in rural settings, with a special focus on the application of smart technologies in natural environments and on active ageing.
The scientific coordination of the summer school was led by Octavian Postolache (General Chair), professor at the School of Technology and Architecture and senior researcher at the Institute of Telecommunications, Mariana Jacob Rodrigues, professor at Iscte-Sintra and assistant researcher at the Institute of Telecommunications, and PhD student Gonçalo Ribeiro.
