Introduction

The Mathematics Department aims to create, transmit and apply knowledge in the field of Mathematics. The department's objective is to clearly and realistically promote the preponderant role of Mathematics in the development of Science and in the daily lives of all of us, considering it essential to obtain solid knowledge that enhances its use in solving concrete problems, namely in the development of new technologies, whether in a business context or in support of research.

The Department of Mathematics (DM) at Iscte is integrated into the School of Technologies and Architecture (ISTA), ensuring teaching and research activities, as well as the dissemination of knowledge and the provision of services to the community.

Situated at one of the most dynamic and innovative universities in the country, the DM combines extensive experience in teaching Mathematics with nationally and internationally recognised scientific productivity.

The DM's teaching activity is transversal to the majority of Iscte's departments, and its teaching staff teaches a varied set of curricular units in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd cycle courses.

The DM, together with IBS and the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL), is responsible for the Master in Financial Mathematics. Some teachers collaborate in teaching master's and doctoral programs at IBS and ISTA, namely the Master in International Management, the Master in Complexity Sciences (in collaboration with FCUL), the Master in Service and Technology Management, the Doctor of Business Administration, and the Doctorate in Complexity Sciences (in collaboration with FCUL).

The teaching provided guarantees fundamental training in Mathematics and exposure to various computational tools suitable for exploring the program content (matlab, Maple, mathematica, spss, stata, EViews, among others). Approaches that allow students to develop abstraction, reasoning, and critical skills necessary for problem solving are privileged.

Some of its members are authors of scientific-pedagogical support books in Mathematics.

DM members carry out their research in collaboration with several Portuguese and foreign research centres, participating in several projects funded by the FCT and the European Community (COST European Project). Scientific activity reflects interest in different areas of Mathematics and is developed both theoretically and with a strong application component across various fields such as Engineering, Management, Economics, Finance, Marketing, and Natural Sciences.

The involvement of DM professors in the supervision and co-supervision of master's and doctoral theses carried out at Iscte and other Universities has been relevant, as well as in participation in academic juries and in referee work in national and international magazines and conferences
