Departaments

The Department of Political Economy prioritises continuous attention to the challenges posed by contemporary economic reality at national, European, and global levels and promotes continuous articulation between knowledge production and teaching. The centrality of the relationship between economic and legal issues in contemporary societies constitutes a central element of their identity.

Members of the Department of Political Economy develop their teaching activities mainly in the degree in Economics, having played a central role in its creation. They also participate in the Masters and Doctoral Program in Economics, in the Masters offered by the Department of Political Economy (Business Law, Politics and Human Resources Management, Development Studies, Economics and Public Policies, Social and Solidarity Economy, Monetary and Financial Economy), as well as in Masters offered by other Iscte Schools.

The Department of Political Economy comprises fifteen PhDs in Economics, four PhDs in Law, and six other professors who collaborate in the legal field.

Members of the Department develop their activity in different scientific areas:

• Political Economy, covering traditional areas of Economic Science, with emphasis on Development Economics, Labour Economics, Innovation Economics, Territorial Economics, Public Economics, Urban Economics, Cultural Economics and Behavioural Economics, as well as a strong tradition in the field of the History of Economic Thought and the Methodology of Economic Science;

• Development Studies, with a specific focus on areas such as governance and public policies, financial system, regional and urban planning, globalisation and international economic relations, skills development, regional and urban development, rural development, ethics and social inclusion;

• Legal Sciences, with emphasis on Commercial Law, Commercial Company Law, Labour Law, Consumer Law, Advertising Law, Transport Law, Banking Law, IT and Internet Law, Constitutional Law, Human Rights, Administrative Law, European Law, Economic and Regulatory Law, Economic Analysis of Law and Legal Aspects of the Activity Scientific.

The Department actively promotes scientific research and its dissemination at the national and international levels. The majority of members carry out these activities within the framework of the research centre Dinamia'CET (Centre for Studies on Socioeconomic Change and Territory). This Iscte research centre is rated “Excellent” by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT). Dinâmia'CET is guided by principles of innovation in knowledge production and values ​​the diversity of its interdisciplinary composition.
