Assessment throughout the semester adopts a continuous, participatory and collaborative approach, enabling the progressive assessment of the competences defined in the intended learning outcomes of the curricular unit. To pass under this assessment scheme, students must obtain a final mark of at least 10/20, with no assessment component graded below 8/20. Assessment is organised into the following main components:

1. Group Activity (50%)

a) Classroom Presentations of Selected Topics (30%)

Students work in groups and select a topic related to the syllabus of the curricular unit. Based on the bibliography and the resources provided by the lecturer, each group prepares an in-depth theoretical and empirical analysis of the selected topic, which is discussed in advance during a tutorial session. The presentation is assessed according to the scientific quality of the work, the clarity and organisation of the presentation, the critical use of the literature, and the group's interaction with classmates and the lecturer during the discussion.

b) Critical Commentary on Presentations (20%)

Throughout the presentations, students participate in the discussion by making relevant comments and asking pertinent questions. In each session, one of the groups assumes the role of rapporteur, preparing a critical synthesis of the main contributions to the discussion, which is submitted in writing to the lecturer and to the group responsible for the presentation.
This component assesses students' capacity for critical analysis, argumentation and synthesis, as well as their collaborative participation in classroom activities. Completion of this component requires the attendance of the students acting as rapporteurs at the corresponding class.

2. Individual In-class Written Exercise (50%)

At the end of the semester, each student completes an individual in-class written exercise based on an examination paper prepared by the teaching team and drawing on the bibliography previously indicated by the lecturer.

Requirements for Assessment Throughout the Semester

To pass the curricular unit through assessment throughout the semester, students must obtain a minimum weighted final mark of 10/20, with no assessment component graded below 8/20.
The use of generative artificial intelligence tools must be transparent, explicitly declared and consistent with Iscte's principles of academic integrity. Whenever such tools are used in the preparation of written assignments or presentation materials, students must include a declaration identifying the tool(s) used, the purpose of their use (e.g. preliminary research, drafting support, language revision or idea organisation), and confirming that they are responsible for verifying the content, interpreting the information and producing the final version submitted.

1. Assessment throughout the semester
Student evaluation in this method is based on the following elements:
- Oral presentation, in group, of a text, or Reading Form (30%);
- Individual written work (70%).
The individual work will be subordinated to a theme related to the program and should be based on bibliographic references validated by the teacher. The length of the paper should not exceed 10 pages. The paper may have a discussion, which will be considered in the final grade.
2. Assessment by exam
The assessment by exam is done by submitting an individual assignment on a topic related to the syllabus. The topic and the bibliography are available on the moodle platform at least 3 weeks before the due date. The paper should not exceed 12 pages. The work may have discussion, which will be considered in the final grade.

The assessment system for this Curricular Unit is designed to measure student progress comprehensively throughout the semesters and covers both methods of assessment in the General Regulations for the Assessment of Knowledge and Competences:

1. Assessment Throughout the Semester, which includes the instruments listed below with their respective weightings for calculating the final grade (between 0 and 20 points):
- Attendance and Participation (10%): students are advised to attend classes regularly so that they can acquire the necessary skills, not only to complete the Curricular Unit, but also to apply in their professions.
- Individual assignments (40%): Each student will have to submit a minimum of three individual assignments via moodle throughout the semester, which will be proposed each week by the lecturer and selected according to the students' preferences and time. These assignments consist of analyses of case studies of international, national, local and organisational planning and evaluation processes, or mini essays on the program contents of this Curricular Unit (with a maximum of 2 pages for each individual assignment). If the student so wishes, he/she can do more work than the minimum number to obtain the grade for the assessment instrument; the teacher will give individualised feedback on all the work handed in via moodle. The grade for this instrument will be calculated from the arithmetic mean of the three assignments submitted via moodle with the highest marks.
- Group work (50%): Critical reflection essay on a practical case of the planning and evaluation process, presented and discussed in class, before the final submission on a date to be determined (maximum 12 pages).
The assessment process throughout the semester, known as continuous assessment, is aligned with the feedback process, to promote progressive and continuous learning, and which is expected to take place informally, in the participatory and active components of the classes, and formally, in individual work and in the presentation and group essay/work.
Continuous assessment requires a minimum mark of 7 in each assessment instrument for approval.

2. Assessment by Exam (100%): for students who opt for this form of assessment or who do not meet the minimum criteria in the modality of Assessment Throughout the Semester, the Final Exam will last 2 hours and will cover all the program content taught over the semester.

Students may choose between two assessment methods established for this curricular unit: (1) Assessment throughout the semester; (2) Assessment by examination.

Assessment throughout the semester: this assessment method comprises a Methodological Applications Pathway, consisting of three assessment components: two individual methodological exercises (35% + 35%) and one group assignment (30%).

The individual exercises take place throughout the semester and are designed to promote the mobilisation and application of the knowledge acquired across the different content blocks of the curricular unit. They may include theoretical or theoretical-practical questions, as well as methodological application tasks.

The group assignment consists of a critical analysis of two empirical studies, one intensive and one extensive, based on master's dissertations related to the scientific field of the degree programme attended by the students. The assignment must follow the structure defined by the teaching team and may be completed individually in duly justified cases.

Assessment by examination: takes place exclusively during the assessment period and covers the entire syllabus of the curricular unit. It consists of an individual written examination including theoretical, theoretical-practical and methodological application questions, designed to assess students' knowledge of the syllabus and their ability to apply social research methods.

In the first assessment period, this examination may be taken by students who choose not to undertake assessment throughout the semester. In the second assessment period, the examination may be taken by students who have not successfully completed the curricular unit in the first assessment period.

Additional oral discussion:

The teaching team may require an additional oral discussion regarding any assessment component provided for in this syllabus whenever necessary to confirm the acquisition of the knowledge and competences being assessed or to clarify discrepancies between assessment components. The additional oral discussion does not constitute an autonomous assessment component, carries no independent weighting in the final grade for the curricular unit, and serves exclusively to validate the grade awarded for the relevant assessment component. The grade previously awarded to that component is provisional until the additional oral discussion has taken place and may be confirmed or revised in accordance with the validation undertaken and the applicable assessment criteria. Students will be notified of the additional oral discussion at least 24 hours in advance, with the date and time indicated. Failure to attend, without valid justification, will make it impossible to validate the relevant assessment component, and the consequences applicable to its non-completion or withdrawal will apply.

Assessment for this course unit can take two forms: a) continuous assessment throughout the semester or b) a final exam.
1. Continuous assessment throughout the semester comprises two distinct components:
- Analysis of the sociological profile of a young person, focusing on their educational background. This will be carried out in groups (of 3 to 4 members) during pre-arranged sessions. Following a (guided) analysis carried out in a classroom setting, the cases analysed by each group will be presented and discussed. Subsequently, a concise final report (approximately 4 pages) must be submitted in writing. Weighting in the final mark: 40%.
- Individual responses to questions set by the teaching team. This exercise will take place in a classroom setting, coinciding with the first and second exam periods. A minimum mark of 9.5 is compulsory. Weighting in the final mark: 60%.
The assessment components may be carried out in other languages: English, French or Spanish.
2. Examination-based assessment:
This applies to students who do not undertake the assessment components proposed for the continuous assessment throughout the semester and to those who do not achieve a pass mark in the continuous assessment. There are two examination periods, plus a third (special examination period) for students who are entitled to special arrangements, as provided for in the regulations.

Assessment throughout the semester will consist of the following elements:
70%: individual exercise comparing one or more dimensions of analysis between educational systems.
30 per cent: oral presentation, in groups, of a text (which can be a book, institutional document/report, article, etc.) selected by the students from a set of possibilities listed by the teacher. Participation in the dynamics of the sessions will be valued in the final classification.

Exam assessment:
Students who do not carry out the assessment elements proposed in the assessment throughout the semester and do not attend the UC classes, as defined in the General Regulations for the Assessment of Knowledge and Competences (RGACC), are in this situation.
Assessment by exam takes place exclusively during the assessment period and potentially covers the subject taught in the course unit. It must include a written test. Students who have opted for this form of assessment and students who have not passed the assessment form during the semester are admitted to this form of assessment.
However, although this method is available, students are encouraged to follow the assessment throughout the semester, as it involves a more consistent and secure learning process of the content in question.

In specific situations, the teacher may organise an oral test or a discussion session on the assessment elements presented, in order to clarify the marks awarded.

There are two types of assessment in the course: assessment throughout the semester or assessment by exam.

Assessment throughout the semester
It is designed to measure student progress through a set of activities that include: class participation; study of the bibliography; information research (theoretical and empirical); presentation of a group assignment, and a final individual essay.

Assessment throughout the semester includes the following assessment instruments:
A. Group presentation (35% - up to 7 points). This presentation is based on an analysis of a specific initiative or project to promote skills in a non-formal or informal context, chosen by the group members. The analysis should be supported by the basic bibliography. It aims to promote skills in analysing non-formal and informal education processes.
B. Individual essay (65% - up to 13 points). Students must apply the knowledge acquired in analysing a non-formal or informal education project.

An oral test is planned as a complementary assessment tool, whenever it is necessary to confirm a classification.

Students with a grade of 10 or more on the sum of the assessment instruments will pass. All assessment instruments must be submitted: failure to hand in an instrument means exclusion from the method of assessment throughout the semester.
Feedback mechanisms are formative in the case of the group work and summative in the case of the critical commentary and the final essay.

Use of AI (Artificial Intelligence)
If you choose to use AI tools, you must follow ethical principles of use, complying with Iscte's academic integrity policies and principles such as transparency (always disclose when and how you use AI tools in your tasks and work) and originality (AI tools can be useful for brainstorming, organising ideas and refining drafts, but ensure that the final product reflects your original thinking and understanding). Misuse of AI may lead to the annulment of the work carried out.

Assessment by exam
In the event of a personal choice or an inability to complete the assessment during the semester, students may take an exam (1st period and 2nd period), which will correspond to 100% of the final grade, and which includes all the syllabus content worked on during the semester. The exam consists of a written test lasting 2 hours.

Students who are legally entitled may also take part in the assessment special period.

Given the content and methodology of the course, students are encouraged to attend it on an assessment basis throughout the semester.
