The Department of Social Research Methods - one of the newest in the new organics of the ISCTE - University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) – is part of the School of Sociology and Public Policy (ESPP).

The Department covers three scientific areas: Social Research Methods, Statistics and Data Analysis applied to Social Sciences and Demography. Thus, it assumes responsibility over managing all courses related with those scientific areas, which comprise i) the various courses of the 1st cycle of the Departments of Sociology, of Political Science and ofHistory ii) and the various courses of the 2nd cycle of the Department Sociology. The Department of Social Research Methods is also in charge of courses in the field of Statistics and Data Analysis courses in the 1st and 2nd cycle of the Department of Psychology. It collaborates with the Department of Anthropology in the course of Field Research.

The numerous courses pertaining to the Department of Social Research Methods aim at developing skills in the following areas: statistics and data analysis; extensive and intensive methods and techniques of research; qualitative methodologies; demography; indicators and statistical sources and field research.

The Department of Social Research Methods is in charge of the scientific coordination of the postgraduate programme in Data Analysis in Social Sciences and of the Specialization Course in Computer-Assisted Content Analysis.

The faculty consists mostly of sociologists with extensive experience in teaching and research, which is reflected in relevant national and international scientific publications. This contributes significantly to proper articulation between the theory and practice, in the context of authentic research, of the different quantitative and qualitative methodologies, thus strengthening not only the quality of the produced research, but also the ongoing updating of the syllabus of the courses assigned to the Department.
