The Scientific Council is the central coordinating body of the scientific activities of the Iscte.

The Scientific Council is composed of twenty-five members:

• Seventeen of whom are elected in accordance with the Statutes and electoral regulations of the Scientific Council of Iscte, from among career teachers and researchers; of the remaining full-time teachers and researchers with a contract of no less than one year and who hold a doctoral degree;

• Eight representatives from the investigation, designated by them under the terms of the statutes and in the electoral regulations of the Scientific Council of Iscte.

The Scientific Council works in plenary and in a permanent committee that meets with the frequency regulated in its regulations.

The President of the Scientific Council is elected from among its members in plenary, by a simple majority in accordance with its electoral regulations. The president is assisted by a Vice-president, who is freely chosen by him, from among the members of the plenary.

The permanent Committee is composed of the president, Vice-president and three members elected under the terms of the Scientific Council's electoral regulations, from among the members of the plenário.

The Scientific Council can delegate to the Scientific Committees of the decentralised units the competencies necessary for the proper functioning of Iscte.

Competencies

Competences of the Scientific Council:

• propose to the rector the regulations of the Scientific Council;

• to pronounce on the creation, transformation;ão and extinction;ão of decentralized units of Iscte;

• to pronounce on the creation, alteration and extension of courses and approve the respective study plans and transition Curricular benefits;

• deliberate on the distribution;ão of the teaching service; and subject; to the approval of the Rector;

• propose or pronounce on titles or distinction honorifics, about the institution of school awards, about institutional agreements or partnerships;

• propose exams and academic competition exams;

• practice the acts provided for by law relating to the teaching and research career;ão.
