CP1. Stages of the scientific research process: formulating the problem, literature revision, building the hypotheses, planning the research and operationalizing concepts, collecting and analysing data, interpreting collected data, writing and publishing research.
CP2. Literature revision: sources and structure.
CP3. Questions and research hypothesis
CP4. Variables, variables types and their operationalization.
CP5. Samples and sampling
CP6. Types of research design: Qualitative, experimental, quasi-experimental and correlacional studies.
CP7. Ethical principles in research
CP8. Measurement error and metric quality of evaluation instruments: validity and reliability
CP9. The criteria for quality in research: internal validity and external validity
CP10. Writing norms of the American Psychological Association.
CP11. Norms for the presentation of a research output/paper.

According to the RGACC, the evaluation process comprises two evaluation modalities:
1. Periodic evaluation:
- Participate in 4 hours of research - SPI system or alternative assignment (10%);
- Present a research paper in class (20%);
- Complete an individual assignment in class about scientific writing rules (10%);
- Do an individual test at the end of the semester (60%).
To be approved students need to obtain at least 9.5 in all evaluation elements.

On periodical assessment two evaluation tools shall be used:
1) Participation in teaching activities - 20%
2) Portfolio consisting on the exercises conducted in the classroom and learning reports- 30%.
3) Final report Observation exercise- 50 %.
Students who do not undergo to periodical assessment or do not reach 10 points shall undergo to examination.

(b) Oral presentation (individual or in group), accounting for 25% of the final grade.

Evaluation throughout the semester: Attendance at least 50% of classes. In this modality, the evaluation is done in three parts. Active participation in a class 5%. The second part consists of a group work on 5G/5GNR simulation scenarios with individual evaluation at the end of classes and the third part consists of a test. The grade of the group work with individual evaluation has a weight of 30%. The remaining 65% is obtained with the grade of the test. Minimum grade of 7.5 in the test.
Evaluation by exam: In this modality, the evaluation is made by the 1st exam (equals to Final written test) or 2nd exam with a minimum grade of 9.5 and a weight of 100% in the final grade.
If the student has taken both types of assessment, the final grade of the subject will be the better of the two.
There is a Special Exam in July (it requires authorization and registration) for the students that have not been successful, previously.

2. Final exam

1. Assessment throughout the semester
a) Active participation in class refers to taking part in debates centred on concepts, analysing excerpts from texts, analysing images, with prior work in class or autonomously outside of class, in groups or individually. This item considers conceptual rigour, critical thinking and the construction of a coherent and informed discourse.
b) This component assesses the work done based on the script provided by the lecturer and the dramatisation done in class.
c) In the presentation of group work in class on human rights and social and political activism (depending on the topic of the class in which the presentation takes place), the autonomous search for literature and sources is valued, with the use of African sources and authors as a premise, as well as the division of labour, the depth of the treatment of the topic and the construction of an oral discourse.
d) In the written version of the group work, consideration is given to the organisation of the text, the coherent organisation of the work, grammatical correctness, as well as rigour in the written explanation of the themes.
d) The individual essay on 2 texts from the course reading list is a review essay, in which students must indicate the arguments, methodology, theoretical and conceptual framework and the main conclusions.
Detection of plagiarism or other forms of academic fraud in assessment elements will result in their annulment.
An additional oral examination may also be required alongside the individual essay.

1. Assessment throughout the semester:

Attendance at 60% of classes is required.

The assessment consists of the weighted average of:

a) Attendance and active participation in classes (20%)

b) Group work presented in class (30%)

Group work (in groups of three to four students) on frameworks of belonging in Africa, such as religion and ethnicity. This work is based on: an academic reference on the topic provided by the instructor, an academic reference on the topic resulting from independent student research, a non-academic reference (such as a blog entry or news report), experiences that students consider relevant to the chosen topic.

Groups will be formed in class 3, references will be selected in class 5 and work will be presented in class 8.
Students must submit a systematisation of the sources used in class 8, along with any visual support for the presentation (PowerPoint or other).

c) A 1,000–1,500-word individual review essay of two chapters from Popular Protest, Political Opportunities and Change in Africa (edited by Edalina Rodrigues Sanches, London: Routledge, 2022 (book available via open access: https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/oa-edit/10.4324/9781003177371/popular-protest-political-opportunities-change-africa-edalina-rodrigues-sanches) or two articles from issue 40 of the journal Cadernos de Estudos Africanos on 'Activism in Africa' (https://journals.openedition.org/cea/5123).

In the essay, students should summarise the arguments, methodology, theoretical and conceptual framework, and main conclusions of the chapters or articles.

The essay can be written in Portuguese or English and must be submitted on the Moodle platform by the assessment deadline indicated in Fénix+. The essay must be an original piece of work carried out independently in accordance with Iscte's Academic Code of Conduct. Detection of plagiarism and other forms of academic fraud will result in the assessment being cancelled. A supplementary oral test may be required in addition to the review essay. For each day that the essay is submitted late, 0.5 points will be deducted.
