A presente dissertação designada de "A importância do vestuário na preservação da identidade da pessoa idosa em ambiente institucional" pretende analisar a importância atribuída à dimensão vestuário no conjunto de elementos relacionados com o direito à autonomia, autodeterminação e individualidade na Estrutura Residencial para Idosos. A investigação abrange a compreensão da
integração do vestuário em ambiente de cuidados institucionais, e examina de que modo o/a assistente social, na sua prática profissional, tem em consideração o vestuário e o valoriza na gestão dos cuidados à pessoa idosa.
A presente investigação é de tipo indutivo, exploratório, e sustenta-se numa abordagem qualitativa, utilizando como técnica a entrevista semidiretiva. Na fase de análise e interpretação dos dados, aplicou-se a análise de conteúdo, com suporte ao programa maxqda.
Os resultados permitiram identificar a perceção dos profissionais face à importância do vestuário para o bem-estar da pessoa idosa, os procedimentos das Estruturas Residenciais para Idosos que incorporam o vestuário e de que forma a base ética do serviço social relaciona a consideração do vestuário nesses procedimentos institucionais. Constata-se que, apesar da tentativa de se incorporar o vestuário como uma dimensão que respeita o direito de autonomia e autodeterminação e a identidade da pessoa idosa, esta dimensão, não se se encontra devidamente incorporada, condicionada especialmente pelo estado de saúde da pessoa idosa.

This dissertation entitled "The importance of clothing in the preservation of the elderly person's
identity in an institutional environment" aims to analyze the importance assigned to the clothing
dimension in the set of elements related to the right to autonomy, self-determination and
individuality in the Residential Care Facilities for the Elderly. The research covers the
understanding of the integration of clothing in institutional care settings, and examines how social
workers, in their professional practice, take clothing into consideration and value it in the
management of care for the elderly.
This research is inductive, exploratory, and based on a qualitative approach, using the semidirective interview as a technique. In the data analysis and interpretation phase, content analysis
was applied, supported by the maxqda program.
The results allowed identifying the professionals' perception of the importance of clothing
for the elderly's well-being, the procedures of the Residential Structures for the Elderly that
incorporate clothing, and how the ethical basis of social work relates to the consideration of
clothing in these institutional procedures. It can be seen that, despite the attempt to incorporate
clothing as a dimension that respects the right to autonomy and self-determination and the identity
of the elderly person, this dimension is not properly incorporated, conditioned especially by the
state of health of the elderly person.
