Este estudo incide sobre as diferentes leituras dos fenómenos de, alegado transe e possessão, observados entre jovens estudantes nas escolas de Guadalupe e Patrice Lumumba em São Tomé e Príncipe. O foco da análise situa-se entre o jogo de interpretações e as intervenções levadas a cabo, com vista a gerir a situação e retomar o funcionamento normal das escolas.
Os objetivos delineados foram: caracterizar a situação e a gestão levada a cabo nas escolas de Guadalupe e Patrice Lumumba; identificar as leituras e jogo de interpretações dos fenómenos de alegado transe nas escolas de Guadalupe e Patrice Lumumba e caracterizar a intervenção dos serviços de saúde mental em STP na referida situação e sua implicação na saúde mental a nível nacional. A colheita de dados ocorreu em Portugal e STP com recurso sobretudo à entrevista semiestruturada de informantes-chave e a análise de notícias veiculadas pela imprensa local.
A análise e o cruzamento dos dados recolhidos permitem concluir que houve uma diversidade de interpretações, que oscilaram sobretudo entre a biomedicina, saúde mental e aspetos culturais locais. A intervenção dos técnicos de saúde mental foi a oficialmente implementada e presidiu todo o processo. A ausência de programa de saúde mental em STP e a fragilidade das respostas disponíveis neste campo, concorrem para algum questionamento desta hegemonia. A reflexão sobre estas situações poderão ser uma ótima oportunidade para compreender a necessidade do desenvolvimento de competências culturais em saúde e da adoção de interpretações particulares, localmente situadas.

This study is focused on different analyses of the situations of alleged trance and possession observed among young students at the schools of Guadalupe and Patrice Lumumba in Sao Tome and Principe. The focus is the interpretative dynamics and the interventions that took place in order to manage the situation and to recover the normal running of the schools.
The outlined objectives were: to characterize the situation and the management carried out at the schools of Guadalupe and Patrice Lumumba; to identify the interpretations about the situations at the schools and the dynamics between them, and finally, to describe the intervention of STP mental health services in this situation and its implications on a national level. The data collection took place in Portugal and STP, with semi-structured interviews of key-informants and analyses of news in the local press.
The data analysis suggests that there were several interpretations, oscillating between biomedicine, mental health and local culture features. The intervention of the mental health professionals was the chosen one and the one that took charge of the situation.
The lack of a mental heath program in STP and the poor resources can lead us to question this hegemony. A reflection about what occurred can provide an excellent opportunity to understand the need to develop cultural competences in health and to adopt local based interpretations.
