O presente estudo tem como objectivo aprofundar o papel da Medicina Tradicional na vivência da doença mental em Moçambique, bem como analisar as possíveis relações entre estas temáticas. Para tal realiza-se a caracterização do estado da arte, o levantamento das representações sociais de Saúde Mental e Medicina Tradicional presentes em artigos do Jornal “Notícias” durante o ano de 2009 e um estudo de caso do Hospital Psiquiátrico do Infulene baseado em dois anos de trabalho como terapeuta no mesmo.
Foi possível apurar que da análise das representações sociais existe uma conotação negativa associada ao doente e à doença mental e que no estudo de caso analisado a presença da Medicina Tradicional é notória. Acrescenta-se a constatação da predominância de diagnósticos psiquiátricos associados a consumos e abusos de substâncias psicoactivas, com principal ênfase nas bebidas alcóolicas.

The goal of this study is to deepen understanding of the role of Traditional Healing in the experience of mental health in Mozambique and to analyze the possible relations between these themes. The present state of the art is identified through a survey of the social representation of Mental Health and Traditional Healing in the newspaper “Noticias” during the year of 2009 and a case study of the Infulene Psychiatric Hospital based on two years of work there as a therapist.
From the analysis of the social representation it was possible to find that there is a negative connotation of mental illness and mental health patients, while the case study revealed there to be a major presence of Traditional Healing in processes of treatment. Moreover it is found that many psychiatric diagnoses are associated with consumption and abuse of psychoactive substances, especially alcohol.
