The subject of this thesis is part of the global problematic of the political relations woven into African societies and focuses, from an interdisciplinary perspective, on the analysis of the languages of power. The patent "crises" of the post-colonial state, the destabilising action of globalisation and the ineffectiveness of applying exogenous models of power to African realities have strengthened the conviction that there is a need to construct individual and collective identities based on "other" languages of power that express their own renewed African political ethic, hypothesis tested in the Felupe (Joola-ajamaat) society, in Guinea-Bissau. This society is managed by a religious-political system which, through a complex initiatory chain, chooses, prepares, and legitimises those in authority. However, although they have managed to adapt to the demands that successive conjunctural alterations have imposed, nowadays new factors, induced by the ever greater imposition of "connection" to the "globalised world", threaten to alter the "order" on which authority itself rests. These factors lead to social conflicts that question the forms and processes of legitimising power and associated with the Guinean State's inability to fully "protect" the "nation", threaten the management of this society at all levels. In this societal framework marked by profound and rapid changes, it is important to analyse the relations and dynamics existing between the initiation chain and power in order to understand the capacity of adaptation of the languages of power, generated and legitimised by the initiation process, to ensure the maintenance of order and social cohesion.
