The work program starts from a topic raised by the student's intellectual interest, a topic that will be addressed according to a customized program of work to be agreed with the supervisor.
Notwithstanding this, the work to be done must materialize in a "paper" containing:
1. The formulation of a question or a problem, theoretically capable of having an appropriate response through the mobilization of scientific research methodology.
2. A review of the theoretical issues underlying the question above, obtained through research, analysis and critical interpretation of the latest internationally accepted scientific literature.
3. In coordination with the earlier theoretical balance, the dissertation must contain an exercise (theoretical and / or empirical) that complements an innovative way to approach the topic under investigation.
4. Finally, the dissertation must contain a conclusive synthesis answering the research starting point, as well as suggestions for further research

The evaluation of the CU process will be through the public discussion of the dissertation presented by the student, and conducted by a panel.
The final rating (0 to 20) will be assigned by the panel, given the academic quality of the written work presented (especially the relevance, originality, and consistency of theoretical and methodological shown), as well as the student's performance during the presentation and discussion of the text.

The UC has two modalities of evaluation.
Assessment throughout the semester, materialized in group work (30%) (10 pages), and in three multiple-answer tests (70%) (done in class using the SmartPhone and based on the literature indicated and in classes). Participation in the classes can be used as a factor to increase the final mark.
The final evaluation takes the form of 1st or 2nd season exam.
Grades higher than 17 are subject to confirmation through specific evaluation.

Students must choose one of the two following assessment methods:
1. Assessment throughout the semester:
• Participation in classes based on questions prepared from readings (20%)
• Each group (four students) will present a perspective on the topics under analysis:
- Debate 1: ‘How to characterise the Neoliberal State?’;
- Debate 2: ‘How to evaluate the State’s action in the health sector from contrasting theoretical perspectives in Economics through direct public provision of health care or through paying an equivalent in cash, such as a health voucher?
After the presentations, a debate will be held between the groups. Ultimately, we will conduct an informal vote to determine the most convincing position (this vote will not be counted towards the grade). (40% in total, 20% assigned to each debate)
• Individual Written Test (40%)
• One week before each debate, groups must send an email to ana.costa@iscte-iul.pt, identifying all resources used in preparing the topic. AI tools must be identified, clarifying how they were used and their role in the work developed.
• Individual written test: The student develops a question, which must fit into a previously prepared theme (from the three themes indicated at an appointed date), in a dedicated session for this purpose (1.5 hours, in January, maximum of 3 handwritten pages, without reference materials).
• On the day of the individual written test, in a classroom setting, the bibliography and other resources used in preparing the topic must be submitted to the professor. The use of AI tools must be accompanied by the identification of these tools, their application, and their role and relevance in the research content developed.

• Final Exam (1st season):
- Written final exam, without reference materials (100%)
- Students who achieve a final grade of 10 or higher will pass the course.

Students who did not pass the continuous assessment or the 1st season exam can access the final exam of the 2nd season (100%).

The final assessment is the responsibility of the internal internship supervisor, taking into account the external supervisor's assessment, the report and its presentation/discussion.
The internship report, which the student must submit directly to the internal supervisor, has a maximum of 15 pages (5000 words) in A4 format (excluding annexes and references).
The report must include the following aspects:
a) Introduction;
b) Internship objectives
c) The trainee's work plan and how they fit into the organisation
d) Results of the internship (activities carried out, work products, degree of fulfilment of the work plan)
e) Reflection on the learning achieved with relevance to the master's programme, making a critical and theoretically grounded assessment of the internship
f) Lessons learnt (success factors, obstacles encountered)
g) Conclusions and recommendations
h) References

The final report must be submitted to the internal supervisor within the assessment timetable defined each year.
The report is presented/discussed in front of the internal supervisor and the coordinator of the 2nd Cycle Internship (Political Economy).
In this curricular unit there is no possibility of taking a final exam and no possibility of improving your grade.

The class consists of a set of discussion sessions with policy makers and experts on pressing issues of public policy in Portugal and the EU. The sessions are moderated by the teaching staff. The contents of the sessions may vary, depending on the guest speakers and the topics that are on the policy agenda in a given year.

The policy areas to be covered in the sessions may include, amongst others:

- Science and technology policies
- Health policies
- Social policies
- Cultural policies
- Territorial policies

- Defence and security policies

Assessment throughout the semester:
Each student must write one report (100% of the final grade). The report should identify the themes addressed by the invited speaker; provide a critical synthesis; develop a research question and relate it to academic bibliography.

Due to the fact that the course is based on a list of seminars, there is no possibility of doing this course by final exam assessment.
