1. Assessment throughout the semester:

Attendance at 60% of classes is required.

The assessment consists of the weighted average of:

a) Attendance and active participation in classes (20%)

b) Group work presented in class (30%)

Group work (in groups of three to four students) on frameworks of belonging in Africa, such as religion and ethnicity. This work is based on: an academic reference on the topic provided by the instructor, an academic reference on the topic resulting from independent student research, a non-academic reference (such as a blog entry or news report), experiences that students consider relevant to the chosen topic.

Groups will be formed in class 3, references will be selected in class 5 and work will be presented in class 8.
Students must submit a systematisation of the sources used in class 8, along with any visual support for the presentation (PowerPoint or other).

c) A 1,000–1,500-word individual review essay of two chapters from Popular Protest, Political Opportunities and Change in Africa (edited by Edalina Rodrigues Sanches, London: Routledge, 2022 (book available via open access: https://www.taylorfrancis.com/books/oa-edit/10.4324/9781003177371/popular-protest-political-opportunities-change-africa-edalina-rodrigues-sanches) or two articles from issue 40 of the journal Cadernos de Estudos Africanos on 'Activism in Africa' (https://journals.openedition.org/cea/5123).

In the essay, students should summarise the arguments, methodology, theoretical and conceptual framework, and main conclusions of the chapters or articles.

The essay can be written in Portuguese or English and must be submitted on the Moodle platform by the assessment deadline indicated in Fénix+. The essay must be an original piece of work carried out independently in accordance with Iscte's Academic Code of Conduct. Detection of plagiarism and other forms of academic fraud will result in the assessment being cancelled. A supplementary oral test may be required in addition to the review essay. For each day that the essay is submitted late, 0.5 points will be deducted. Students can choose one of the two assessment methods established for this UC in accordance with the General Regulation on Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (RGACC) of ISCTE: Assessment throughout the semester and Assessment by exam.

Assessment throughout the semester: This assessment method consists of two components: Methodological Applications Pathway (60%) and Group Assignment (40%).

a) Methodological Applications Pathway: This component consists of a sequence of methodological exercises that challenge students to apply the knowledge acquired in each block of programmatic contents of the UC. The exercises are completed individually throughout the semester, either synchronously or asynchronously, allowing for continuous assessment of students and their progress in the field of social research methods. To remain assessed throughout the semester, students may opt to skip the submission of only one of the proposed methodological exercises. The grade obtained in this component accounts for 60% of the final grade for the UC.

b) Group Assignment: This component involves analyzing two empirical studies, one intensive and one extensive, based on the examination of two master’s theses related to the students' areas of interest. Preference should be given to analyzing master’s theses developed within the scientific field of the student's enrolled master's program. The work can be done in groups (two members) or individually. The document must be written according to the structure proposed by the teaching team. To remain assessed throughout the semester, students must achieve a minimum grade of 10 points on the Group Assignment. The grade obtained in this component accounts for 40% of the final grade for the UC.

In addition to the minimum requirements for each component, assessment throughout the semester requires students to attend at least 60% of the classes.

Assessment by exam: This assessment occurs exclusively during the exam period and covers all the material taught in the curricular unit, with both theoretical and theoretical-practical questions. It consists of an individual written exam designed to evaluate both the practical skills for applying social research methods and the theoretical knowledge gained from reading the main bibliography. Students who have chosen this assessment method, as well as those who did not pass the assessment throughout the semester, are eligible for this assessment method.

Additional information about assessment throughout the semester:

a) Active participation refers to participation in debates focused on concepts and analysis of excerpts from texts, along with work in class or independently outside of class. This item considers conceptual rigor, critical thinking, and the construction of a coherent and informed discourse.
b) This component assesses the work completed based on the script provided by the professor and the role-play performed in class.
c) The individual essay consists of a review essay, in which students must present the arguments, the methodology, theoretical and conceptual framework, and main conclusions of four academic articles published in scientific journals. The proposed articles to be used for this goal must be pre-validated by the professor and fit within a predetermined list of topics provided at the beginning of the semester. Plagiarism detected in the essays will result in their annulment. If AI use is detected, a supplementary oral exam can be held.
