CP4: Principles for the design and elaboration of data collection instruments and ethics in research.
CP5: Analysis and discussion of qualitative and quantitative results.
CP6: Preparation for public defense of the dissertation.

The master's thesis in Social Work is presented and defended in public tests and will be evaluated by a jury. The evaluation is based on the scientific merit of the dissertation in its theoretical, methodological, empirical components, applicability to the area of Social Work and in the quality of its oral presentation and defense, in accordance with Iscte regulations.

Although this curricular unit does not contribute to the final grade of the dissertation, a training monitoring is planned with the aim of supporting students in the organization and progressive development of their work.

As part of this monitoring, it is recommended to present two videos updating the progress made over the two semesters. These videos will have a recommended duration of between 5 and 10 minutes (with a maximum limit of 10 minutes).

The videos are non-binding and do not influence the final grade, but allow the teacher of the curricular unit to comment on the progress and send suggestions to the advisor. They can also be sent to the evaluation panel to support a more informed appreciation of each student's path.

Contents per semester

1.º Semester - State of the Art and Theoretical Structure
The video should present the progress in the survey and analysis of the state of the art, and may include: a) Commented bibliography with reference to authors and relevant studies; b) Scheme or provisional index of the theoretical chapter of the dissertation.

2.º Semester - Methodology and Field Work
The video should focus on the methodological elements of the investigation, the results obtained or conclusions, depending on the development phase of each student's dissertation/project work.

Training feedback
After the delivery of the videos, a feedback of the works presented will be made, promoting dialogue between students and the sharing of suggestions.

The assessment of the course "Contemporary Social Inequalities" is structured to reflect the development of students' theoretical and practical skills throughout the semester, through a combination of group and individual activities.

The semester-long assessment is divided into three main components:

1. Group Activity (50%)
a. Classroom Presentations on Selected Topics (30%)
• Description: Students select a topic of interest based on the course content. Using resources provided by the professor, they are organised into teams according to their chosen topic. They must prepare a proposal to deepen the topic and discuss it with the professor in a preparatory tutorial, exploring different theoretical and empirical perspectives. Presentations are evaluated based on clarity, organisation, depth of analysis, and ability to respond to questions from peers and the professor.

• Objective: This activity aims to develop research, critical analysis, and communication skills, aligned with learning objectives OA1, OA2, OA4, and OA5. Carrying out this activity necessarily involves being present in class

b. Comments on Peers' Presentations (20%)
• Description: During the presentations, students are encouraged to actively participate by making constructive comments and pertinent questions. This component evaluates students' ability to critique and reflect on their peers' work, promoting a collaborative learning environment. One of the groups is appointed as the debate rapporteur, responsible for producing a report to be sent to the professor and the presenting group.

• Objective: This activity reinforces critical analysis and collaboration skills, aligning with learning objectives OA3 and OA6. Carrying out this activity necessarily involves being present in class

2. Written essay with Consultation (50%)
a. In-depth Study of the Topic Chosen by the Student (50%)
• Description: At the end of the semester, each student takes a written essay with consultation, focused on the topic they chose and deepened during the classes. This test evaluates the student's ability to apply the theoretical and methodological knowledge acquired, using resources and electronic databases to support their answers.

• Objective: This component aims to assess the in-depth understanding of the studied topics, synthesis ability, and practical application of knowledge, aligning with learning objectives OA1, OA2, OA3, OA5, OA6, and OA7.

Basic Conditions for Semester-long Assessment
• To pass the course, students must achieve a minimum weighted average of 10 points, with no less than 8 points in any of the assessment components.

Final Assessment (100%)
• Written exame , responding to a prompt defined by the professors.

The course evaluation, in continuous modality, is through a work group and an individual report. The final grade will be obtained using the following weighting:
- Group work - 70% of the final grade;
- Individual report - 30% of the final grade.
The course does not include a written exam. Alternatively, the evaluation can be carried out by submitting the two elements provided for in the continuous evaluation modality, presented only on an individual basis. These evaluation elements must be completely original and cannot be evaluated, in whole or in part, at any time.

This curricular unit is assessed in two ways: throughout the semester (1) or, alternatively, by examination (2).
(1) Assessment throughout the semester will have two compulsory assessment periods. One assessment consists of an individual written assignment on a human rights and social work topic previously discussed and agreed upon with the lecturer(s) (maximum eight pages). The work can be submitted in Portuguese, English, or Spanish (75% of the final mark), and a second element of individual assessment through oral presentation (25% of the final mark). The oral presentation is counted through compulsory attendance at an open class/seminar organized by the Curricular Unit (CU) and within the CU timetable, in which participation will be assessed through compulsory attendance and contributions to the debate in the form of questions. As an alternative to mandatory attendance at the seminar/open class, and under the terms previously agreed between the student and the lecturer, an oral presentation of the written essay may be scheduled (25% of the final mark). Assessment in the ‘throughout the semester’ mode implies compliance with the two assessment moments.
(2) Assessment by exam takes place exclusively during the assessment period and covers all the material taught in the course. It must include a written test (a single assessment moment) in essay format to be submitted via the Moodle system.

1. Assessment throughout the semester
This modality consists of the development of an individual written paper (maximum of 8 pages) on a topic related to super-diversity, previously discussed with the instructor.
Requirements:
• The discussion of the chosen topic with the instructor is mandatory and will take place in person during a scheduled session.
• There is no minimum attendance requirement for classes, but attendance at the topic discussion session is compulsory to be eligible for this assessment modality.
• Detailed guidelines for the paper will be provided in class and made available through digital platforms.
Grade Weighting:
• 30% – Discussion and justification of the chosen topic
• 70% – Written paper
Minimum required grades for each component:
* Discussion: 3 out of 6 points
* Written paper: 7 out of 14 points
Both components must be passed for the final grade to be considered.
Resubmission in Later Exam Periods:
Students who have passed the topic discussion but:
• Fail or
• Do not submit the written paper in the first exam period
may retain this assessment modality for the second exam period and the special exam period.

2. Final Assessment
This modality is intended for students who:
• Have not met the requirements for continuous assessment, or
• Choose to follow this modality directly.
It consists of a final exam, which accounts for 100% of the final grade for the course unit.
