Partindo da reinterpretação do “Concurso Público de Conceção para a elaboração do projeto da Biblioteca Municipal de Setúbal”, lançado pela Câmara Municipal de Setúbal em 2013, é proposto como trabalho uma intervenção num novo lote localizado no Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa, em
Benfica. O projeto da biblioteca nasce da vontade de estabelecer uma ligação entre os dois extremos do terreno, um corpo que conseguisse criar uma harmonia num espaço desqualificado.
O corpo nasce do desenho de uma laje, concebida como a continuação natural da cota mais alta do terreno, perlonga o terreno e define o gesto principal do edifício, funcionando simultaneamente como cobertura, percurso e espaço público. A passagem por entre o edifício transforma-se num eixo
de atravessamento que articula diferentes cotas e usos, promovendo a continuidade do percurso urbano. As fendas abertas na laje definem momentos de entrada e encontro, permitindo que a luz e o movimento revelem a relação entre o interior e o exterior. Mais do que um edifício isolado, a biblioteca afirma-se como um elemento de união, capaz de organizar e dar sentido a uma malha urbana fragmentada.

Starting from the reinterpretation of the Public Design Competition for the Development of the Setúbal Municipal Library Project, launched by the Setúbal City Council in 2013, this work proposes an intervention on a new site located within the Polytechnic Institute of Lisbon, in Benfica.
The library project arises from the intention to establish a connection between the two extremes of the site, a built form capable of creating harmony within a fragmented and underused space. The volume emerges from the design of a slab, conceived as the natural continuation of the site’s highest level, extending across the terrain and defining the building’s main gesture. It functions simultaneously
as roof, pathway, and public space.
The passage through the building becomes an axis of transition, articulating different levels and uses, and promoting the continuity of the urban fabric. The openings carved into the slab define moments of entry and encounter, allowing light and movement to reveal the relationship between interior and exterior. More than an isolated structure, the library asserts itself as a unifying element, capable of organising and giving meaning to a fragmented urban landscape.
